A Near Miss on December 28, 2024
 
There was a moderate risk of severe weather from east Texas to Alabama on 12/28/2024. This is where the the most unstable environment (to make storms grow) was co-located with the highest shear values (to make storms rotate). Temperatures in this area topped out in the 70s at many locations. Meanwhile, readings in Arkansas were in the 50s (a more stable atmosphere).

Temperatures in this area topped out in the 70s at many locations. Meanwhile, readings in Arkansas were in the 50s (a more stable atmosphere).
 

A powerful storm system approached Arkansas from the southern Plains on December 28th. While there was some risk of severe weather in southeast sections of the state, severe storms tended to stay along the Gulf Coast in a more unstable (warm/moist) environment.

 

 

Severe weather warnings were posted in Louisiana and Mississippi at 645 pm CST on 12/28/2024. There were no warnings in Arkansas.

Shear values were high from east Texas to Alabama, and numerous tornadoes were spawned. In Arkansas, there was some significant hail in the morning. Baseball size stones were reported at Dermott (Chicot County) and Halley (Desha County).

During the evening, the aforementioned storm system strengthened as it crossed the state. Gusty winds were noted across the eastern counties. A tree was downed onto a structure at Lexa (Phillips County). The structure was a total loss, and two occupants were inured and transported to a local hospital. Some flooding was reported in Ashley, Chicot, and Lee Counties. Otherwise, much of Arkansas had rain (some heavy) and rumbles of thunder at times.
