Quick Event Summary

In the video: Dangerous heat spread into Arkansas from the northeast (with a large area of high pressure) by June 23-25, 2024. The experimental National Weather Service HeatRisk was major to extreme.

The big story in June was the heat, and it was felt mainly in the last week of the month. During that time, a large ridge of high pressure built over the region from the northeast. Heat Advisories and Excessive Heat Warnings became common from the 23rd on. Texarkana (Miller County) had three straight days of triple digit temperatures (101 degrees on the 23rd through the 25th).

In the video: Showers and thunderstorms accompanied a cold front through Arkansas on 06/26/2024. There was some severe weather in places, with wind damage reported.

Short term relief followed on the 26th as a cold front pushed through Arkansas from the north. Scattered thunderstorms accompanied the front, and there was severe weather in places (mainly wind damage). Trees were blown down in Green Forest (Carroll County), Hartford and Huntington (both in Sebastian County), Crystal Springs (Garland County), Lewisville (Lafayette County), and Magnolia (Columbia County). A 64 mph gust was measured at Grider Field on the east side of Pine Bluff (Jefferson County). Behind the front, late afternoon temperatures were mostly in the 70s/80s (as of 400 pm CDT).

During the remainder of June, severe storms were few and far between. On the 3rd, trees were toppled at Hot Springs (Garland County), and also along the Louisiana border at Texarkana (Miller County), Smackover (Union County), and Crossett (Ashley County). A quick two to three inches of rain led to street flooding at Fort Smith (Sebastian County). On the 9th, a shed was damaged by thunderstorm wind at Altus (Franklin County). Quarter to half dollar size hail occurred at Greenbrier (Faulkner County), Morgan (Pulaski County), and Leachville (Mississippi County). A 53 mph gust was recorded at Little Rock National Airport (Pulaski County). There was a landspout reported near Montrose (Ashley County) on the 21st.

The lack of storminess led to a largely dry result. In fact, rainfall was two to more than three inches below average in parts of the north. This was the case at Fayetteville (Washington County) and Harrison (Boone County). There were some wetter than normal totals in the south at El Dorado (Union County), Pine Bluff (Jefferson County), and Texarkana (Miller County), but not by much (generally less than an inch).

Oppressive conditions were noted on 06/29/2024. At 300 pm CDT, heat index values ranged from 100 to 115 degrees across Arkansas.

As the month ended, the heat returned in a big way. On the 29th and 30th, maximum afternoon heat index values ranged from 100 to 115 degrees, and there were a few indices that were even higher! The mercury hit the century mark again (102 degrees) at Texarkana (Miller County) on the 30th. At Pine Bluff (Jefferson County), the temperature hit 100 degrees for the first time in 2024.
