While warm temperatures and dry conditions were seen at the start of the month, February ended up well below normal in terms of temperatures with a significant winter weather event along with a period of extremely cold temperatures.
|
Well above normal temperatures were seen for the first 7-8 days of the month. A stalled front wobbled back and forth from the 4th through the 8th which brought drastic swings in temperatures from north to south across the state. One of the most dramatic swings in temperatures occurred on Saturday, the 8th. Highs on the 8th climbed into the 70s to 80s with Texarkana topping out at 90 degrees! A cold front moved through from NW to SE across the state during the afternoon and evening hours which cooled off temperature dramatically.
Cooler temperatures were seen for several days after with some occasional precipitation. With cold air in place around the 10th of February, a series of disturbances began to move across the region. This provided an abundance of rain to much of the state through the 12th with a few rounds of winter weather across portions of northwest and north-central Arkansas. Freezing rain was most abundant across the higher elevations of north-central Arkansas from the 10th through 12th. Some ice accumulation occurred. Elsewhere, some minor sleet/snow accumulation occurred across far NW parts of the state during the morning hours of the 12th. Another surge of cold air moved into the state through the morning hours of the 13th which led to some below zero wind chills in a few spots across NW AR. Some snow flurries were seen as well.
A new storm system arrived and brought winter weather to the state from Feb 18-19. The most widespread sleet/snow occurred across northern Arkansas with amounts tapering off into central Arkansas. Very cold temperatures followed the precipitation with morning lows in the single digits and teens and highs below freezing. Some portions of northern Arkansas fell into the negative single digits.
A slow warming trend began during the weekend of the 22-23 with temperatures climbing into the 60s and 70s through the 25th.
