AFTER MANY MONTHS OF MOSTLY ABOVE AVERAGE TEMPERATURES, READINGS
TOOK A NOSEDIVE IN JANUARY. THE MONTH ENDED 1.2 DEGREES BELOW THE
1991-2020 MEAN. IN TERMS OF DEPARTURE FROM NORMAL, THIS WAS THE
MOST SIGNIFICANT COOL ANOMALY SINCE LAST JULY (IN OTHER WORDS
THE COOLEST DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE AVERAGE MONTHLY VERSUS 30-YEAR
MEAN MONTHLY TEMPERATURE). WHILE AVERAGE LOWS AND HIGHS WERE
BOTH COOL, THE LOWS ARE WHAT MADE THE DIFFERENCE.

THERE WERE 20 DAYS WITH LOW TEMPERATURES AT OR BELOW FREEZING AND
THREE DAYS WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES AT OR BELOW FREEZING, WHICH WAS
THE MOST IN EIGHT YEARS (SINCE 2014).

BOTH RAINFALL AND SNOWFALL WERE ABOVE AVERAGE FOR THE MONTH. THIS
WAS THE WETTEST JANUARY IN TWO YEARS, AND THE FIRST JANUARY IN FOUR
YEARS WITH MEASURABLE SNOWFALL.

THE AVERAGE HIGH TEMPERATURE, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS BELOW THE 30-YEAR
MEAN, WAS THE WARMEST SINCE 2020. THE AVERAGE LOW TEMPERATURE WAS
THE COLDEST SINCE 2018, AND THE 10TH COLDEST ON RECORD. THE AVERAGE
