Other Weeks & Seasons 2011 (September 25 - October 1) |
The NWS Week of Service celebrated its 10th Anniversary in 2020! Like so many things, the NWS Week of Service had to adapt, while still hoping to reach those in need. We expanded the NWS Week of Service to the entire meteorological autumn (September 1 through November 30), and re-titled it the NWS Autumn of Service. This allowed more flexibility to safely volunteer in our communities.
This included:
The most popular activities were conducting food or supply drives. The NWS Food Drive Competition was also expanded from just 1 week to the entire month of October. Given that many folks never stepped into an office, some offices went virtual and staff members donated money directly to food banks and pantries across the country. The food drive has grown a lot since we started in 2013 with only WFOs Flagstaff, La Crosse, Marquette, and Milwaukee.
In 2020, we collected just over 4 tons of food (8,018.48 lbs) and $7,468.50 in monetary donations. Over the past 8 years, just over 12 1/2 tons (25,190 lbs) of food and other items have been donated during the NWS Week of Service Food Drive! All of our numbers are also given to the NOAA Representative to the Commerce Feds Feed Families Food Drive! While the Department of Commerce campaign typically runs from the end of June until early August, our numbers are included in their final count.
We had 41 NWS offices participate in the 2020 NWS Food Drive Competition, including WFOs, RFCs, CWSUs, Regional, and National offices. Due to increased participation, winning categories also expanded.
The Winners were:
Top RFC: Lower Mississippi RFC for donating 966 pounds
Top Combined WFO and CWSU: WFO Chicago & Chicago CWSU for donating 384 pounds
Top Combined WFO/RFC/CWSU: WFO Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, Missouri Basin RFC, & Kansas City CWSU for donating 190 pounds
Virtual Food Drive Top Regional or National Office: National Water Center for donating $4,698.50
Other activities included...

Columbia, SC WFO:[top] | School Supply Drive |
We chose to do a school supply drive (October 14-November 11) because the pandemic has been particularly hard on parents and students. In ordinary years, many students in Saluda County can't afford the supplies they'll need for class and obviously, this year has been particularly hard for those families. Students completing work at home now need the supplies they would typically rely on the school to supply. And there are fewer resources for those students that are in the classroom. The SC Dept. of Education notes that 76.8% of the students at Saluda Middle live in poverty and the district is often overshadowed by the larger ones in the state for donations. In addition to the school supplies, we collected donations to purchase classroom sets of whiteboards. One thing the Assistant Superintendent mentioned that would be particularly helpful for both students working at home and in the classroom was individual whiteboards. A nearby hardware store sells sheets of dual-sided whiteboard/blackboard material that can be cut into smaller sizes for each student and is much more cost-effective than buying the individual boards. We were able to donate 42 whiteboards which will provide 3 classrooms with learning tools for years to come. The attached photo is of the Saluda County School District Superintendent, Dr. Harvey Livingston, and Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Abbey Duggins. They were extremely appreciative of the donation. |

During October, El Paso, TX WFO collected and donated 221 pounds of food to El Pasoans Fighting Hunger (EPFH). This was the most successful food drive in EPZ history and likely the largest volunteer effort our office has ever conducted. These donations will make a big difference for many local families affected by the ongoing pandemic. The need for food assistance continues to grow and they are on track to distribute 100 million pounds of food by the end of the year. EPFH currently serves 250,000 food-insecure people, with that number increasing due to recent layoffs and business struggles. In 2019, EPFH proudly distributed 32.5 million pounds of food across El Paso, Hudspeth, and Culberson Counties. Our donations help prevent numerous families and refugees in the borderland from going hungry, and I am very thankful to live in a place that supports those most in need. We, including myself, often take food, health, and shelter for granted. Doing what we can to help those in need is just another aspect of our office's commitment to protecting lives and property. |
