Other Weeks & Seasons:
|
|
Besides working diligently to issue the most accurate forecasts and warnings possible, our service extends well beyond the bricks and mortar in which we work. During the week of September 30th through October 6th, our staffs made a concerted effort to reach out in our communities to help those in need. All of these additional activities occurred outside of our normal work hours.
Many NWS entities and partners participated in the 2nd Annual National Weather Service (NWS) Week of Service:
872 employees and their family members helped 108 different organizations.
The most popular activities were conducting food drives and/or volunteering at food banks. During the 28 food drives, approximately 3,570 pounds of food and $882 in monetary donations were collected. Over 3,300 people can be fed by the monetary contributions alone! At 21 food banks, over 17 tons of food was sorted and 10,060 meals were packaged.
Four WFOs (Topeka, Wichita, Springfield, and Kansas City/Pleasant Hill) held a friendly fitness competition via the "President's Challenge". These 4 offices offices raised nearly $3,000 for more than 20 different charitable causes.
A list of the offices that participated along with an office by office summary can be found below. If we missed your office's activity during this week, send an e-mail to Jeff Boyne.

Their staff volunteered at the Community Food Bank of Tucson on October 3rd. The Food Bank was in a bind as they had recently conducted inventory that resulted in a tremendous amount of donated non-perishable food being “backed up” in their holding area. The food needed to be sorted quickly not only so it could be best utilized, but also to make room in the warehouse staging area so that normal operations could more easily continue. As the WFO Tucson crew tackled this task, the Food Bank coordinator commented to WFO Tucson NWOC S organizer WCM Ken Drozd, "Some of our workers were getting nervous about all this food backing up, but I told them that I had a great group coming in today that would take care of the job quickly"; |

Crossroads operates one of the busiest emergency food pantries in the state and a free/low-cost thrift store. They are a nonprofit, grassroots organization that assists low income, disabled and minority Utahans meet basic survival needs and addresses essential issues affecting their quality of life. They provide relief and hope to people who often don't have anywhere else to turn. This year, our merry band of 10 volunteers put a fresh coat of paint on the front porch of the Crossroads center, painted some interior stairs, prepared baby care and pet care to go packs and did some general cleaning. Additionally, we held an Italian luncheon for all employees at WRH on Tuesday, October 2, asking for donations of $5 from those who had lunch. This voluntary fund raising effort generated $130 that we were able to donate to Crossroads to help with increased assistance costs this winter. Glenn Bailey, executive director of Crossroads, wrote us a nice thank-you note for our efforts. "I just wanted to thank you again for the work and the donation of $130 to Crossroads. You guys were great to work with! We really appreciate the help. Please express our appreciation to everyone involved." | ||||
61 | Wilmington, NC WFO - Masonboro Island Estuarine Reserve
Four members of their staff (Carl Morgan, Steve Pfaff, Rachel Gross-Zouzias and Michael Perdue) and their families kayak to one of the dredge spoil islands in the Masonboro Island Estuarine Reserve to clean up litter and marine debris. Masonboro and the dredge spoil islands are only accessible by boat, but the trash problem has increased in recent years as more people have found out about them and utilized the islands for recreation. Approximately 150 pounds of trash was collected. Everyone had a great time and we are already planning a similar trip for the spring. |
