Heat Builds in the West; Severe Thunderstorms and Heavy Rain in the Upper Midwest and Mid-Mississippi Valley; Extremely Critical Fire Weather in the Northwest on Saturday

A heat wave over the Southwest will intensify this week, peaking and expanding into the Intermountain West and northern High Plains this weekend. Severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are expected over parts of the Upper Midwest to mid-Mississippi Valley today. A Heat Advisory is in effect until 8 PM MDT /9 PM CDT/ this evening for the Davis, Guadalupe, Chinati, and Delaware Mountains, as well as the Eddy County Plains. Although other locations are left out of the Advisory, please note that it will still be hot elsewhere. Be sure to stay hydrated and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
Highs near or above 100 degrees will be commonplace again today, but a front Saturday brings temperatures closer to seasonal norms (low-to-mid 90s). The front also allows low to medium rain chances (20-50%) to return for parts of the area Friday night and again Saturday evening.
Multiple days of 100+ degree heat means a greater chance of heat stress and heat illness this week. Be aware of the signs of heat stress, limit time spent outdoors (especially during the hottest part of the day), and stay hydrated!
