PRELIMINARY REPORT: (This report will be updated frequently as more information becomes available...last updated 11 AM EST 5/20/03).
Map of the damage path of the Brownsville/Liberty City tornado Thursday, March 27, 2003
At approximately 545 PM EST on Thursday, March 27, 2003, a tornado smashed through the Brownsville/Liberty City neighborhood of Miami from approximately 54th Street to 60th Streets between 27th and 35th Avenues. According to news reports, one person was killed when a tree trunk was torn off by the force of the tornado and smashed through the front window of their home near NW 57th Street and 30th Avenue. There were 14 (updated 5/20/03) injuries. Tree and property damage was extensive and a number of power lines were downed. Several roofs were reported blown off of frame houses in the Brownsville-Liberty City area as well. Damage figures provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) so far (5/20/03) include $2.2 million for housing assistance and $6.2 million for other assistance, totalling over $8.4 million (updated 5/20/03).
Significantly, this is the first tornado death in Miami-Dade County since five persons were killed in a tornado that struck north Miami-Dade County on April 5, 1925 and the first in South Florida since a death in Hendry County in 1982 (there was a tornado death in Broward County in 1980, the last tornado death in the three metro Atlantic coast counties).Miami National Weather Service Forecast Office (WFO) meteorologists determined that the path of the tornado was approximately 1/3 mile (600 yards) wide and about 4 miles long with the greatest damage being F2 on the Fujita Scale (113 to 157 mph). The tornado first touched down in East Hialeah, near NE 2nd Street and E 4th Avenue. The tornado moved east for four miles roughly along and just north of 54th Street before lifting near north Miami Avenue. The maximum width and strongest winds occurred in the Brownsville area between 37th and 27th Avenue. The widest portion of the tornado was estimated at one third mile with the maximum intensity of F2 (113-157 mph) on the Fujita Tornado Damage Scale.
The tornado that hit Brownsville/Liberty City was one of a series of tornadoes to strike South Florida on Thursday, March 27. In fact, there were probably six tornadoes that touched down in South Florida on Thursday. (1) A tornado was videotaped crossing Interstate 75 east of Fort Myers in Lee County early Thursday afternoon, (2) a tornado was caught on film in Collier County at about 3 PM, (3) a tornado was reported by the public near the Miccosukee Indian community on the Tamiami Trail in west Miami-Dade County around 330 PM EST, (4) a tornado was reported near the Okeelanta community in western Palm Beach County around 3 PM EST, (5) a tornado struck North Miami Beach around 525 PM EST, (6) and another tornado struck the Brownsville and Liberty City neighborhoods of Miami around 545 PM EST.
Map of the damage path of the Ives Dairy Road/Hallandale Beach tornado Thursday, March 27, 2003
The tornado that earlier struck North Miami Beach touched down near NE 18th Avenue and 191st Street. The tornado tracked northeast for about 20 blocks damaging trees and roofs. The tornado crossed Ives Dairy Road near Highland Lakes Boulevard and continued north into Hallandale Beach in Broward County around SW 10th Street between SW 6th and 7th Avenue. The width of this tornado was only about 1/8 mile and the worst damage in Miami-Dade County was F1 on the Fujita scale (a moderate tornado with winds of 73 to 112 mph) but only F0 (a gale tornado with winds estimated from 40 to 72 mph) in Broward County. The entire life cycle of this tornado was witnessed by people in the area, occuring around 510 to 525 PM EST.
