A cold front moved across the upper Midwest during the evening of March 3rd and eventually became stationary across the Ohio valley and central Mississippi river valley areas. Low pressure developed along the western end of the front over central Texas on the morning of the 4th. As the low moved northeast along the front during the day, a large area of rain developed north of the front and spread across most of Iowa and into northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. By mid morning on the 5th, the low had moved northeast into southern Wisconsin. Rain was still falling across northeast Iowa into southern Wisconsin where temperatures remained in the middle to upper 30s. Farther north across Minnesota into central and northern Wisconsin, the low had dragged enough cold air into the area to change the precipitation over to snow. Snow continued to fall across this region into the afternoon as the low moved off into Michigan. By the evening of the 5th, the low had moved far enough east to drag the snow out of the region.
Around the local area, accumulating snows were primarily limited to areas north of Interstate 90. Amounts ranged from under an inch to around seven inches. The highest snowfall totals reported were 7.5 inches at Goodrich, Wisconsin and 7.0 inches at Plainview, Minnesota along with Owen, Wisconsin.
Snow totals for March 4 and 5.
