A cluster of strong to severe thunderstorms developed during the early evening hours of June 26 over eastern South Dakota and southwest Minnesota, fueled by very warm and moist air in place across the region. The thunderstorms then tracked east, forming into a "bow echo" over south central Minnesota. Bow echoes, which are a band of high radar reflectivity values in the shape of a bow, are known to produce damaging winds. In addition, they may produce large hail and even a few tornadoes.
As this bow echo crossed south central and southeast Minnesota between 10 p.m. and midnight on the 26th, numerous reports of wind damage were received, along with hail up to the size of nickels. In fact, an automated weather station in Dodge Center, MN reported a hurricane force wind gust of 74 mph. As the bow echo moved into southwest Wisconsin, it began to weaken. However, a few reports of wind damage along with gusts up to 60 mph occurred in La Crosse and Monroe counties. Another storm developed ahead of the bow echo in Jackson county, producing a gust of 60 mph in Black River Falls around midnight.
Street flooding was also a problem during this thunderstorm event due to a combination of the moist air and already saturated grounds. Any thunderstorm was able to produce heavy rainfall, which was especially true with the bow echo. Rainfall rates were observed between 1/2 and 3/4 quarters of an inch in 15 minutes in Rochester when the bow echo moved through.
Map showing the multiple warnings issued late Saturday night (June 26) and early Sunday morning (June 27). Yellow are Severe Thunderstorm Warnings, Red is a Tornado Warning, and Green outlines are Flash Flood Warnings. (Click on image to enlarge) Courtesy of Iowa Environmental Mesonet . The map also shows the area that NWS personnel surveyed the damage to investigate possible tornado touchdowns. The damage in this area was consistent with straight-line winds in the 70-85 mph range from the west to southwest as 90% of the damage fell/aligned toward the northeast. |
