During June 2021, temperatures were well above normal across the Upper Mississippi River Valley. Temperatures were 5 to 8°F warmer-than-normal.  Monthly average temperatures ranged from 66.1°F at Medford, WI to 76.6°F at La Crosse Regional Airport.  La Crosse, WI had their hottest June.  The previous record was 76.5°F in 1933.  Many other locations in the Upper Mississippi River Valley had one of their 5 warmest Junes. Very Warm June

The hottest daily temperature was 100°F on June 6 and June 11 in Theilman, MN (Wabasha County).  These were the first 100°F days in the Upper Mississippi River since May 15, 2013 (Austin, MN).

Like May, June 2021 precipitation was highly variable across the Upper Mississippi River Valley.  The driest areas continued to be found in southeast Minnesota, northeast Iowa, and southwest Wisconsin. Precipitation totals were up to 2” wetter-than-normal along and north of Interstate 90 in Wisconsin and up to 3” drier-than-normal across northeast Iowa and southwest Wisconsin.  Precipitation totals ranged from 1.39” at Guttenberg Lock & Dam 10, IA to 12.96” near Harpers Ferry, IA.  Rochester, MN only received 1.46" of rain fell during June. This was 3.89" drier than the 1991-2020 normal of 5.35". This made it the 7th driest June and the driest since 1985 (0.94" - 2nd driest).

  • During June 2021, the average temperature at La Crosse Regional Airport was 76.6°F.  This was 5.6°F warmer than the 1991-2020 normal of 71°F.  This was the hottest June.  The previous record was 76.5°F in 1933. Multiple temperatures records were set or tied during the first 11 days of the month. There were 5 record highs (all new records) and 4 record warm lows (3 tied and 1 new record). During the first 15 days of June, the temperature averaged 79.2°F (9.8°F above the 1991-2021 normal). This was the warmest first half of a June. The previous record was 75.3°F in 2017.
  • 14 days had high temperatures of 90°F or hotter. This was tied for second-most in a June with 1910 and 1988. Only 1933 (15 days) had more than this June.  
  • 10 days had low temperatures of 70°F or warmer. This was the most in a June. The previous record was 8 days in 1874.
  • The warmest temperature was 99°F on June 5 and June 10.  These were the warmest June temperatures since 2011 (100°F on June 7).
  • The coldest temperature was 49°F on June 22.

  • A total of 5.30" of rain fell during June. This was 0.22" wetter than the 1991-2020 normal of 5.08".
  • The wettest June day was 2.77" on the 26th. This set a daily precipitation record for the date. The previous record was 2.30" in 1990.  This was the first precipitation record since December 28, 2019 (546 days). This was the 4th longest stretch of days since 1900 between daily precipitation records. The longest stretch was 841 days (February 19, 2002 - June 9, 2004). 
  • The La Crosse area started the month with a moderate (D1) drought deteriorated to a severe (D2) drought by mid-June and ended the month abnormally dry (D0). Prior to this June, a severe drought had not occurred in La Crosse since 2012.

Another record warm low was tied on June 24. 
  • During the first 15 days of June, the temperature averaged 75.5 degrees (9.7°F above the 1991-2021 normal). This was the warmest first half of a June. The previous record was 72.5°F in 2017.
  • 9 days had high temperatures of 90°F or hotter. This was tied with 1931 and 1988 for 7th most in a June and the most since 1988. The most in a June was 14 days in 1933 and 1934.
