A tornado touched down west of Charles City and moved north-northeast before dissipating northwest of Colwell. The tornado did extensive damage to seven buildings at the Floyd County fairgrounds. At a fertilizer plant across the road from the fairgrounds, a roof was partially peeled off from one building while the main building was left-leaning after having an entire side ripped off. Three homes along the path were damaged severely enough to be declared inhabitable. This tornado caused $630,000 in property damage.   A small tornado briefly touched down north of Floyd.

  A tornado touched down on the Floyd-Chickasaw County line north of Nashua and moved northeast for 2 miles.  Two farms had extensive damage, including a blown down silo, several damaged barns and outbuildings, sheared off trees, damaged crops, and downed utility poles.  Hail the size of golf balls and baseballs was also reported by law enforcement officials and a local television station.  The tornado caused an estimated $15,000 in crop damage.

  An F2 tornado struck a farmhouse near Colwell, IA (Floyd County), slightly injuring a couple of people, removing the roof, tipping the house over into the basement, and destroying a number of outbuildings.  There were 6 other tornadoes during the afternoon and evening (1 in Wisconsin, 3 in Iowa, 1 in Illinois, and 1 in Michigan).  The strongest was an F4 which moved about Polk and Jasper counties in Iowa (north Des Moines).

  This tornado started in Butler County and moved into Floyd County moving a pickup truck 300 feet and destroying many barns.

  Moved northeast from north of Hansell, passing east of Aredale, west of Greene, east of Marble Rock, and devastating Charles City. The tornado grew larger and more intense as it approached Charles City. The huge funnel passed directly through town, destroying 337 homes, and causing about $30 million in damage. The tornado continued to the northeast hitting Elma and causing another $1.5 million in damages. From there the tornado turned to the north and dissipated south of Chester, 4 miles south of the Minnesota border. Nearly 2000 homes were damaged or destroyed. All 13 deaths occurred in Floyd County. 450 injuries were reported in Floyd County and 12 injuries in Howard County.  https://www.weather.gov/arx/may151968

  Moved east-northeast from 2 miles north of Nora Springs, passing 3 miles north of Cresco and lifting near Yucatan, MN. The only F4 damage was to two large farmhouses, 3 miles northwest of Kendallville in Winneshiek County. About 28 farms lost buildings in Iowa. Six people were injured in Minnesota, as homes and barns were destroyed near Canton, Lenora, and Newburg (Fillmore County). Six people were injured in Floyd County and 5 in Howard County.

  This tornado skipped northeast from south of Marble Rock through Carrville, where homes were unroofed. Total damage estimates totaled $10,000.

  This tornado started in Butler County, Iowa, and moved north from a meeting place known as "Farmers Grove", where the trees were mowed down. All barns were destroyed on one farm about 5 miles northwest of Greene.

  This tornado touched down in extreme southeast Floyd County, a few miles north of where the four counties meet. The deaths and majority of the damage occurred in Chickasaw and Winneshiek Counties as it moved east-northeast.

  This tornado tracked northeast leaving only the floorboards on a small farmhouse about 5 miles northwest of Charles City. In the east part of Charles City, 5 homes were destroyed and 20 others were severely damaged. A man was killed by a falling chimney. About 200 buildings were damaged.
