Low pressure developed over northern Kansas February 2nd with a warm front extending into northern Missouri. As an upper level disturbance moved out of the Rockies and across the upper Midwest, precipitation developed well north of the warm front from South Dakota into Wisconsin. Snow fell across South Dakota and western Minnesota, but in southeast Minnesota and western Wisconsin temperatures were warm enough for rain to occur. By the end of the afternoon on the 2nd, temperatures had cooled enough to allow the rain to change over the snow across Minnesota and Wisconsin. The snow continued through the evening hours before moving north of the region early on the 3rd. Most snowfall totals from this event were in the 3 to 4 inch range with the exception of Rib Lake Wisconsin in northeast Taylor county where 7.5 inches fell.
The second round of precipitation occurred later in the day on the 3rd as the low moved from northern Missouri toward the Chicago area. Freezing drizzle occurred in the pre-dawn hours across southeast Minnesota into southwest Wisconsin putting a light coating of ice on exposed surfaces. Snow then developed across the region during the late morning and early afternoon hours and continued into the evening. Snowfall totals with this event averaged 2 to 4 inches, with Hillsboro Wisconsin in eastern Vernon county receiving 5 inches. Northwest winds of 20 to 30 miles an hour developed during the evening hours and helped to create some blowing and drifting snow.
