National Weather Service Weather Safety and Preparedness Information

 

NOAA All Hazards Weather Radio

NOAA All Hazards Radio is our main communication link to the people we serve. Warning and forecast information, current weather conditions, special public weather information and weather safety tips are all incorporated into our daily Weather Radio broadcasts which are available to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The 6 NWR transmitters in Northern Michigan and the assigned areas they serve are shown below.

Highlighted counties and marine zones are the designated SAME/tone alert areas for that particular transmitter:

Local Broadcast Cycle

All normal NOAA Weather Radio programming will be suspended during Severe Thunderstorm and/or Tornado Watches/Warnings in order to give timely and consistent warning service.

NOAA Weather Radio Programming Schedule for East Upper and Northern Lower Michigan

 

Station Identification Plays every 15 minutes
Weather Synopsis Plays every cycle (includes Hazardous Weather Outlooks)
Hourly Weather Observations Plays every cycle and updated around 15 minutes past the hour
Marine Weather Observations Plays every cycle and updated around 15 minutes past the hour
2 Day weather forecast / Nowcast   Plays every cycle
3 to 7 Day weather forecast Plays every 15 minutes
5 Day Open Lakes Marine Forecasts Plays every 30 minutes at approximately :00 and :30
2 Day Nearshore Marine Forecasts Plays every 30 minutes at approximately :15 and :45
Daily Climate Summary Plays every 30 minutes between 2am-noon
Monthly Climate Summary  Once per hour (around the top of each hour) on the first day of each month
Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Watches Normal Programming is interrupted to give the latest severe weather information. Safety statements will play on NWR.
Severe Thunderstorm, Tornado, and Special Marine Warnings All programming is suspended with the exception of warnings, follow-up statements and short term forecasts (Nowcasts).
Flood Warnings Included in normal programming with SAME/EAS tone alert when necessary.
Blizzard Warnings Included in normal programming with SAME/EAS tone alert.
Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories Included in normal programming.
