Student Volunteer Position Description

 


 

LOCATION:              National Weather Service (NWS), Wichita, Kansas

PURPOSE:               The student volunteer program is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in meteorology. 

OBJECTIVE:             Expose student volunteers to 3 integral parts (below) of working for the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Wichita and demonstrate their acquired knowledge.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

1.                     Operations:

A.        HMT/Intern Desk: In a training capacity, participants will assist the staff in performing the duties of the HMT/Intern desk. This includes but is not limited to: Answering the Telephone; QC of NOAA Weather Radio, AHPS, Web site; generating and disseminating products including the SCD, CLI, and RER products at the discretion and review of the lead forecaster on duty.

B.        Forecasting: In a training capacity, participants will assist the staff in performing analysis according to their ability and will learn how forecasts are prepared and disseminated. Participants may also produce and disseminate various products including the RWS at the discretion and review of the lead forecaster on duty. 

2.                     Systems: The participant will learn how to utilize AWIPS including its software and applications, NOAA Weather Radio, PCs, and any other technical aspect of the Weather Forecast Office.

3.                     Project: The participant will complete a project agreed to with the Science and Operations Officer (SOO). This will provide the participant with exposure to the "down time" environment of the NWS and what is expected of them. It will also provide the applicant with resume building material and will be of operational relevance. If the applicant wishes, these results may be given to the staff as a presentation, local web page review, or will be left for the SOO.
