Udall Tornado. May 25th 1955

The climax of several days of tornadic and severe thunderstorm activity late in May 1955 occurred on the night of Wednesday, May 25th. A tornado struck Udall, Kansas, some 40 miles north-northeast of Blackwell. The tornado traveled in a general southwest to northeast direction across the center of town. Most of this south-central Kansas town of about 500 people was leveled. The death toll stands at 80 at this writing, and 250 were injured. Read More...

Hesston Tornado. March 13th 1990

This devastating tornado was rated an F5 after it tore a path of destruction through the town of Hesston. This large tornado destroyed 226 homes and 21 businesses in Hesston and caused 25 million dollars in damage across Harvey County. Read more...

The Inland Hurricane. June 19th 1990

One of the most destructive storms in South Central Kansas history swept through on June 19th 1990 and would later be titled the “Inland Hurricane”. This storm produced a large swath of 65 to 120 mph straight line winds through parts of six counties causing over $80 million dollars damage. Read more...

April 26th 1991 tornado outbreak

On that day, tornadoes ravaged the Plains from morning until after dark, affecting areas from east Texas as far north as the Iowa/Minnesota border. Fifty-five total tornadoes developed, thirty of which were rated an F2 or greater on the Fujita scale. Unfortunately, twenty-one people – seventeen from one storm alone – died that day as a direct result of the severe weather.  Read more...

Halloween Flood of 1998

Friday evening on the 30th of Oct 1998 was the start of a long weekend of widespread flooding rains impacting central and southeast Kansas. Rainfall amounts of 4-8 inches were common in Central Kansas, with 6-10 plus inches being recorded across South Central and Southeast parts of the state.  Read  more...

May 3rd 1999 Haysville tornado

Widespread tornado outbreak tears across much of Oklahoma and Kansas. Around sunset on May 3rd 1999 an F4 tornado ripped across Haysville Kansas killing 6 and causing millions in damage. Read more...

April 19th 2000 Parsons tornado

Around 8:30 pm on April 19th 2000 two supercells tracked across southeast Kansas. The more intense storm dropped an F3 tornado that tore through the heart of Parsons Kansas. 30-35 people were injured with 20 square blocks destroyed. Read more...

April 21st 2001 Hoisington tornado

A violent tornado tore through Hoisington Kansas during the evening of April 21st 2001.  This tornado reached F4 intensity killing one person and injuring 28 along with destroying 200 homes. Read more...

April 14th 2012 tornado outbreak

Eighty six tornadoes were reported in this outbreak which mainly affected Kansas, Nebraska and northern Oklahoma. The strongest tornado was an EF-4 that struck Central Kansas.  The tornado which caused the most damage was an EF-3 that struck the southeast side of Wichita after dark. Read more...

April 29th 2022 Andover Tornado

A small but strong tornado tore through parts of Andover Kansas on April 29th 2022.  This tornado was rated an EF-3 with around 1,000 structures damaged and 300-400 destroyed. This tornado caused 3 injuries and no fatalities. Read more...
