December 2020 Climate Summary and Highlights

Wichita

The average monthly temperature of 37.8 degrees was 4.0 degreesabove normal. It tied for the 28th warmest December since records began in 1888, and was the warmest since 2019. The warmest temperature at Eisenhower airport was 67 degrees on the 9th, and the coldest temperature was 15 degrees on both the 14th and 25th. Precipitation-wise, 1.70 inches fell at Eisenhower airport, which was 0.50 inches above normal for the month. It was the 29th wettest December on record, and the wettest since 2019. The highest daily precipitation for the month was 1.07 inches on the 29th. Furthermore, 2.9 inches of snow fell, which was 1.3 inches below normal for the month. The highest daily snowfall was 1.3 inches on the 3rd. Despite the below normal snowfall, it was the snowiest December since 2014.

Salina

The average monthly temperature of 36.7 degrees was 4.4 degrees above normal. It was the 23rd warmest December since records began in 1900, and was the warmest since 2015. The warmest temperature recorded at the airport was 68 degrees on the 9th, and the coldest temperature was 14 degrees on the 25th. Precipitation-wise, 0.86 inches fell at the airport, which was 0.08 inches below normal for the month. It was the 44th wettest December on record, and the wettest since 2019. The highest daily precipitation for the month was 0.67 inches on the 29th.

Chanute

The average monthly temperature of 39.6 degrees was 4.9 degrees above normal. It was the 17th warmest December since records began in 1898, and was the warmest since 2019. The warmest temperature recorded at the airport was 71 degrees on both the 9th and 10th, and the coldest temperature was 11 degrees on the 25th. Precipitation-wise, 1.47 inches fell at the airport, which was 0.28 inches below normal for the month. It tied for the 52nd wettest December on record, and the wettest since 2018. The highest daily precipitation for the month was 0.83 inches on the 29th.
