August 2021 Climate Summary and Highlights
Much of the region was generally warmer and drier than normal in August. Below are some highlights from our three main climate sites: Wichita, Salina, and Chanute. WICHITA EISENHOWER AIRPORT The monthly average temperature was 81.6 degrees, which was 1.7 degrees warmer than normal. It tied for the 27th warmest August since records began in 1888, and it was the warmest since 2011. Seven days reached or exceeded 100 degrees during the month, which was above the 30-year normal of about 4 days. The warmest temperature was 103 degrees on the 12th, and the coolest was 59 degrees on the 3rd. Rainfall-wise, only 1.72 inches fell at Eisenhower Airport during the month, which was 2.58 inches drier than normal. It was the 40th driest August on record, and the 3rd driest since 2000. SALINA MUNICIPAL AIRPORT The monthly average temperature was 81.2 degrees, which was 2.6 degree warmer than normal. It tied for the 35th warmest August since records began in 1900, and it was the warmest since 2014. Five days reached or exceeded 100 degrees during the month, which was normal for a typical August. The warmest temperature was 103 degrees on the 12th, and the coolest was 57 degrees on the 2nd. Rainfall-wise, 4.07 inches fell at the airport during the month, which was 0.36 inches wetter than normal. It was the 41st wettest August on record. CHANUTE MARTIN-JOHNSON AIRPORT The monthly average temperature was 81.8 degrees, which was 2.2 degrees warmer than normal. It tied for the 19th warmest August since records began in 1897, and it was the warmest since 2011. The century mark (100 degrees) was never reached during the month, which was a few days below the 30-year normal of about 2-3 days. The warmest temperature was 99 degrees on the 24th and 25th, and the coolest was 60 degrees on the 4th. Rainfall-wise, 1.77 inches fell at the airport during the month, which was 2.02 inches drier than normal. It was the 36th driest August on record. |
