Weather Summary for Iowa
National Weather Service Des Moines IA
314 AM CST Sat Dec 21 2024

Today:

Although there were some areas of cloudiness, much of the state was
clear overnight. Early morning temperatures varied from the single
digits northeast to the lower 20s south. Winds were generally light
from the north or northeast at 10 mph or less, but that still produced
some wind chills below zero northeast.

Similar weather is anticipated across Iowa later today with partly to
mostly sunny skies. Temperatures should remain near seasonal values,
with readings in the teens or 20s by late morning and afternoon highs
from around 20 northeast to the lower 30s central and southwest.

Tonight and beyond:

The main weather story across the region heading into Christmas week
will be warmer temperatures with highs from the upper 20s and lower
30s north to the 40s south, and even 50 degrees or more along the
Missouri River Valley at times. The forecast will remain mainly dry
for several days with the next chances for precipitation light rain or
light snow Christmas Eve night into Christmas Day from southeast Iowa
into adjacent parts of Missouri and Illinois. The end of the week will
see intermittent slight chances for light rain across the region, but
no signs of any significant system that would impact travel.
