Overview
A tornado outbreak occurred on the afternoon and early evening of July 19, 2018 over central Iowa. This is a summary of the tornadoes along with various photos/videos, radar, satellite, and environmental data from that event. In 2018, there were a total of 69 tornadoes that touched down in Iowa, 21 of which occurred on July 19, 2018. Of those 21 tornadoes, 19 were within the Des Moines NWS office area and 2 occurred in the area of the Davenport, IA NWS office. The most significant damage was in Pella, Bondurant, and Marshalltown. All 19 tornadoes have been rated and the track information is listed below in the Tornado Section. There were two tornadoes rated EF-3, two EF-2s, one EF-1, and 14 EF-0s.

Cloud top cooling to a lesser extent is also noted on the storm that affected Marshalltown. |

Environment
A strong low pressure system tracked across southern Minnesota and pulled a warm across Iowa through the day on Thursday, July 19,2018. Morning thunderstorm activity cleared early enough to allow the atmosphere to destabilize through the late morning into the afternoon hours. The focus for supercell development was along the warm front from around the Ames area south to the Missouri border. This warm front triggered supercells at it was passed through the Des Moines Metro and first report of a tornado came into the office shortly before 3 p.m. CT. After a pair of tornadoes rolled through Bondurant, the tornadic supercells continued east and caused significant damage in Pella and Marshalltown.

Figure 2: 3 p.m. CT (2000 UTC) EHI (Energy-Helicity Index) is that storm rotation should be maximized when CAPE is large and SRH is large. 0-3-km EHI values greater than 1-2 have been associated with significant tornadoes in supercells. |
