...A VERY WARM APRIL ACROSS THE AREA... It was very warm across the region for the month of April. Many climate sites set their all time warmest April on record. Of note, A 90 degree temperature was observed in Charleston on the 30th. Charleston averages a 90 degree temperature in April about once in every 4.5 years. The other climate sites topped out in the mid to upper 80s on that day. As far as precipitation is concerned, it was a tale of north versus south. Parkersburg, Clarksburg, and Elkins all received above average precipitation while Huntington received well below average precipitation. Both Charleston and Beckley were near normal. Of note, there were many days in the month where precipitation was recorded though. In fact, Beckley tied for the 6th highest number of days where precipitation was recorded. Both Charleston and Clarksburg tied for 5th highest number of days with precipitation. Below is a summary of top 10 finishes for the month of April. Beckley: Average temperature of 58.4 is the warmest April on record, surpassing the previous record of 57.3 set in 2011. Charleston: Average temperature of 61.4 is the 2nd warmest April on record. Clarksburg: Average temperature of 58.2 is the warmest April on record, surpassing the previous record of 56.7 set in 1954. Also, 5.64 inches of precipitation was recorded for the month which is now the 6th wettest April on record. Elkins: Average temperature of 56 is the warmest April on record, surpassing the previous record of 55.6 set in 1954. Huntington: Average temperature of 62.4 is the 2nd warmest April on record.
Parkersburg: Average temperature of 60 is the warmest April on record, surpassing the previous record of 59.7 set in 1896 and again in 1954.
