Welcome to the Colorado "Day By Day" Lightning Casualty Statistics page, Lightning Casualty Statistics section of the Colorado Lightning Resource Page. This page list "day by day" lightning casualty statistics in text format for the entire state of Colorado from January 1, 2010 through December 31, 2019.      2010

 

2010 May 26, 1230 MST, 130 MDT, Adams County. A child was struck in the leg by lightning while watching television. 

 

2010 June 12, 3:10 MST, 410 MDT, Chaffee County.  A motorcyclist was struck by lightning in Chaffee County on Highway 285, and died from his injuries a few days later at a hospital in Denver.

 

2010 July 10, 1240 pm MST, 140 pm MDT, El Paso county. A  man was playing paintball outside. He was airlifted to Denver in critical condition.

 

2010 August 3, 3 pm MST, 4 pm MDT, Boulder County. A hiker was struck while traversing The Narrows portion of Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park. The 31-year-old man was struck late in the afternoon at an elevation of 13,800 ft. after taking shelter under a rock ledge when a storm approached. The lightning apparently struck a rock then hit the man in the head. He was knocked out for approximately 14 hours and was not found until the next morning. The man suffered from numerous burn injuries. He was concious and able to walk slowly. He recalled his hair standing on end but was unable to remember being hit by the lightning.

 

2010 August 16, 1120 MST, 1220 MDT, Arapahoe County. A 14-year-old teenager was struck by lightning while washing her family's car. The bolt struck the street nearby; it then traveled up a stream of water flowing from the vehicle and hit the teenager. She received minor injuries.

 

      2011

 

2011 June 29, 230 pm MST, 330 pm MDT, Arapahoe County. Two airmen from the Colorado National Guard recieved minor injuries when they were struck by lightning. They were struck while on duty at a flight line at Buckely Air Force Base.

 

2011 July 24, 2 pm MST, 3 pm MDT, El Paso County. Lightning struck at the Aztec Family Raceway, injuring five people.

 

2011 August 31, 130 pm MST, 230 pm MDT, Custer County, Two men were setting up camp when they were struck by lightning. One man died and the other was knocked unconscious.

 

2011 September 9, 4 pm MST, 5 pm MDT Adams County. A man was struck by lightning at the Adams County Fairgrounds. He was leaning against a tree while watching a cross country meet when the tree was hit. The lightning traveled down the tree and up through the ground, using him as a conductor. The victim received second and third degree burns.

 

      2012

 

2012 September 26 750 pm MST, 850 MDT Denver County. A Male was injured by lightning in Denver

 

     2013

 

2013 July 18, 2 pm MST, 3 pm MDT, Larimer County. A 65-year-old woman was struck by lightning in Rocky Mountain National Park. She was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

 

2013 July 18, 222 pm MST, 322 MDT, Larimer County. Nine farm workers working the fields at Grant Family Farms in Wellington were injured by a lightning strike; all were transported to local hospitals. Two were critically injured. Those two workers were semi-conscious, could not walk, and had muscle weakness and tingling in their hands and feet. Four other workers had serious injuries and three others had minor injuries

 

2013 July 31, 1:45 pm MST, 2:45 pm MDT, El Paso County,   Twelve soldiers, involved in training exercise, were struck by lightning south of Butts Field on the north side of Fort Carson. Two soldiers were taken to a hospital in Colorado Springs, one in critical condition. The other ten soldiers were taken to the base hospital and later released.

 

     2014

2014 July 7, 7 pm MST, 8 pm MDT, Jefferson County.  A man was injured by a nearby lightning strike while he recorded a video of a thunderstorm with his cell phone. He was standing in his garage, when a nearby lightning bolt knocked him out. He suffered overall body aches and had a ringing sensation in one of his ears.

 

2014, July 11, 12:15 MST, 1:45 MDT, Larimer County. One woman was killed and seven others injured by a lightning strike in Rocky Mountain National Park; she was the first lightning fatality in the park since 2000. The incident occurred at the Ute Crossing Trail, just off of Trail Ridge Road between Rainbow Curve and Forest Canyon Overlook. Six of the other victims suffered minor injuries. One had to be hospitalized when he was knocked unconcious; he suffered burns on his shoulder and scrapes to his face when he was knocked to the ground.

 

2014 July 11, 3:15 MST, 4:15 MDT, Hinsdale County.  Two ultramarathon runners from Canada were struck by lightning on Handies Peak at about the 14,050 foot level while competing in the 100-mile Handrock Endurance Run. Both men incurred minor injuries. The headlamp of one runner exploded when struck by the lightning.

 

2014, July 12, 2:30 pm MST, 3:30 pm MDT, Larimer County. One man was killed, and four others injured, when they were struck by lightning in Rocky Mountain National Park. The incident occurred near Rainbow Curve along Trail Ridge Road, not far from where another woman was struck and killed by lightning approximately 26 hours earlier. Flash flooding was observed in Douglas and Elbert Counties.

 

2014, August 26, 2:30 MST, 3:30 MDT, Denver County. Two men were struck by lightning as they sat under a tree to avoid a heavy downpour. One of the men was unconscious and had no pulse when emergency responders arrived. He was immediately taken to Denver Health was listed in critical condition. The other victim suffered less severe injuries. He was treated at the scene and hospitalized, then released a few hours later.

 

     2015

2015, May 01, 2:40 pm MST, 3:40 MDT, Arapahoe County. A teenager was critically injured when he struck by lightning. He was standing on a hill in an open field near Town Center Mall.

 

2015, June 24, 1:30 pm MST, 2:30 pm MDT, El Paso County. Five men were struck by lightning at a construction site on the northeast side of Colorado Springs...suffering varying degrees of injuries.

 

2015, June 28, 10:30 AM MST , 11:30 AM MDT, Clear Creek County. Three people were transported to Denver-area hospitals after a lightning strike 500 feet below the summit of Mt. Bierstadt. A total of fifteen people were hit by lightning. Eight adults were were transported from the trailhead, and that three of those were taken to Denver-area hospitals. One of them was in serious condition, the other two had non-life threatening injuries. A dog was also killed.

 

2015, July 17, 1:30 PM MST, 2:30 MDT, Chaffee County.  Lightning struck four people on the Denny Creek Trail above timberline. One woman perished.

 

      2016

2016, July 02, 6:00 PM, 7:00 PM MDT, Mesa County. Lightning struck a girl riding an ATV near Glade Park. The girl was injured but survived.

 

2016, July 19, 4:45 PM MST, 5:45 MDT, El Paso County. A lightning strike injured three people at the El Paso County Fairgrounds.

 

2016, July 19, 4:50 PM MST, 5:50 MDT, Jefferson County. Two men at the Indian Tree Golf Course were struck by lightning when they sought shelter from a rapidly developing thunderstorm under a tree. One man suffered minor injuries, while the otr died from this injuries.

 

2016, August 19, 1:00 PM MST, 2:00 PM MDT, Larimer County. In Red Feather Lakes in Larimer County, a man was struck by lightning while talking on his cell phone. He was standing outside a cabin between two 60-feet-tall trees when he was struck.

 

      2017

2017, May 07, 2:30 MST, 3:30 MDT, Douglas County.  In Sedalia, a 37-year-old woman and her horse were killed after lightning hit a nearby tree. A teenage girl was also seriously injured. 

 

2017, August 13, 10:45 MST, 11:45 MDT, Dolores County. Lightning struck two mountain bikers who had gotten below tree line to seek shelter. One mountain biker was killed. The other only had minor injuries and her clothes were shredded. They had been riding on a trail just above the 10,200 foot level on the East Fork Trail near the Lizard Head Wilderness Area. The mountain bikers were either under or very near a tree when struck by lightning. After being struck, the male victim was talking and conscious for about a minute, and then collapsed. CPR was administered immediately by the female victim, and then an EMT who was also mountain biking in the area came over to assist, but all efforts were unsuccessful.

2018, July 07, 1:30 PM MST, 2:30 PM MDT. Boulder County. 1 Male Injured

2018, July 08, 2:10 PM MST, 3:10 PM MDT. Grand County. 1 Female Injured

2018, July 27, 4:00 PM MST, 5:00 PM MDT. Park County. 1 Male and 1 Female Injured

 

     2019

2019, May 06, 1:58 PM MDT, 2:58 MDT, Elbert County. Four men were struck by lightning and one was injured while standing near a wrought iron fence at the Riverbend Cemetery. Age of the injured was 39 and the uninjured were 65, with two in their 80s.

 

2019, July 01, 2:45 PM MST, 3:45 MDT, Fremont County. One confirmed lightning injury occurred in downtown Canon City. An 11 year old female was struck inside her home near a sink and had to be transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

 

2019, July 14, 12:00 PM MST, 1 PM MDT, Boulder County. A Denver man was killed and his wife injured after he was struck by lightning when the two were hiking near the Bear Peak West Ridge Trail. The man was likely hit from a direct lightning strike to his upper body. His wife was not directly hit, but injured by the electrical current from the strike that hit her husband.

 

2019, August 17, 12:00 PM MST, 1 PM MDT, Larimer County. A 31-year-old man was hiking below tree line, between Dream Lake and Lake Haiyaha, in Rocky Mountain National Park, when he was struck by lightning. Other hikers found the seriously injured man and called park rangers. He was evacuated to the Bear Lake Trailhead and then taken by air ambulance to Medical Center of the Rockies. He suffered a broken jaw and severe burns over one third of his body.
