A series of Pacific storm systems will continue to impact the Northwest U.S. into this coming weekend with periods of gusty winds, high surf, low elevation rain, and heavy mountain snow. Severe thunderstorms will be possible on Thursday across central/east Texas into western Louisiana and possibly the ArkLaTex and southeast Oklahoma. Read More >
A weakly defined warm front moved slowly north through Oklahoma. South of the front dew point temperatures were in the middle 60s, with afternoon temperatures well into the 70s. Lift associated with an upper-level disturbance combined with around 2500 J/kg of CAPE created favorable atmospheric conditions for severe thunderstorm development.
A large supercell thunderstorm developed over Major County, and quickly became severe. Baseball-size hail was reported west of Fairview, OK. Hail up to softball-size was reported west of Okeene, OK as the supercell continued moving southeast. A larger area of at least golfball-size hail developed from south of Kingfisher to northwest Oklahoma City, with embedded areas of larger than baseball size. Wind speeds also averaged around 50 mph, but some locations measured winds in excess of 60 mph.
Reports of damage to cars and automobiles, as well as to trees and vegetation came in by the hundreds as the supercell moved through the heart of the Oklahoma City metro area. Hail drifts reached several feet deep over some areas. Some areas even reported hail still on the ground more than 12 hours later. The reported hail sizes became smaller as the storm moved into Seminole, Hughes, and Atoka counties. Although there has been no monetary value placed on the hail storm, estimations have put the damages well into the millions.
