Note: Extreme fire danger does not necessarily mean Red Flag Warning Criteria has been met. Check the local NWS office for the area of concern for additional information.

Red Flag Warning Criteria (effective 11/2/2022)

Issued for any of the combinations below.

  • 20 mph sustained winds or frequent gusts to 30 mph for 2 hours or more.
  • RH of 20% or less for 2 hours or more (3 hourly observations in a row).
  • Fuel status supportive for extreme fire growth.
  • 25 mph sustained winds or frequent gusts to 35 mph for 2 hours or more.
  • RH of 25% or less for 2 hours or more (3 hourly observations in a row).
  • Fuel status supportive for extreme fire growth.
  • When there is a greater than 15% coverage of dry lightning with critical fuels.
  • Issued in scenarios with strong wind and critical fuels, even if RH values are greater than traditional thresholds (e g. curing values > 80%, after the first hard freeze in fall and prior to widespread spring green-up). This is especially true when daytime temperatures approach record values with ample sunshine, RH commonly below 50%, and frequent wind gusts greater than 40 mph. Historically, these scenarios produce extreme fire behavior.
