Each year on the third Monday of January, schools, banks, post offices, and federal offices across the country close to celebrate the national holiday Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In 1983, 15 years after Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s death, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill into law making the third Monday of January a national holiday celebrating the birth and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. The holiday was officially first celebrated in 1986. In Utah, Martin Luther King Day is also known as Human Rights Day. In Arizona and New Hampshire, Martin Luther King Day is also know as Civil Rights Day.
