Memorial Day Weather for Northern Illinois:   Statistics for Chicago and Rockford

 

Memorial Day was observed in the United States on May 30 prior to 1971, and has been observed on the last Monday of May since 1971.

 

Chicago:
The following statistics comprises 145 years of data.  Data collection began at the University of Chicago, then at Midway, and currently at O'Hare which is now the official station for Chicago.

Frequency distribution of high temperatures for Chicago. This dataset shows that the most frequent range of high temperatures on Memorial Day is in the 70 to 79 degree range. Since Memorial Day isn’t on a set day, there is no normal high temperature. The highest temperature on Memorial Day is 95 degrees which occurred on May 28th in 2012. The lowest high temperature on Memorial Day is 42 degrees, which occurred on May 30th, 1889. Last year, on May 29th, 2017, the high temperature was 77.

Frequency distribution of low temperatures for Chicago. This dataset shows that the most frequent range of low temperatures on Memorial Day is in the 50 to 59 degree range. Since Memorial Day isn’t on a set day, there is no normal low temperature. The lowest temperature for Chicago on Memorial Day is 32, which occurred on May 25th in 1992. The highest low temperature on Memorial Day is 77 which occurred on May 28th in 2012. The low temperature on May 29th, 2017, was 55 degrees.

This dataset shows that the most frequent amount of precipitation recorded on Memorial Day is 0.00”, which accounts for 53% of the days in the dataset. The next most frequent range is the 0.02” to 0.25” range. The highest amount of precipitation on Memorial Day occurred on May 28th, 1984 when 1.00” of rain fell. This is the only instance where an inch or more of precipitation fell on Memorial Day. Last year, May 29th, 2017, no precipitation fell.
