Light to moderate snow will continue into Saturday over the Great Lakes, Central Appalachians, and Northeast. This weekend into next week, a series of atmospheric rivers will bring gusty winds, periods of heavy rain, and mountain snow to northern California and the Pacific Northwest. Colder temperatures are in store for the weekend from the Great Lakes to East Coast. Read More >

1.) Esmond Tornado
(click on image to enlarge) |
Summary: A tornado began just southwest of Esmond and tracked southeast for about 3.4 miles, ending east of McQueen Road. Tree and crop damage occurred along the path of the tornado, and one outbuilding was destroyed as well. |
2.) Elburn Tornado
(click on image to enlarge) |
Summary: This tornado began near the intersection of McNulty Road and Meredith Road, where crop damage was evident in high resolution satellite imagery. The tornado then tracked southeastward through Elburn, downing trees and damaging a few farm buildings and houses. The tornado ended east of Brundige Road and south of State Route 38 after destroying a metal farm building at the Hickory Lane Equestrian Center. |
3.) St. Charles Tornado
(click on image to enlarge) |
Summary: As a surge of strong straight-line winds was entering St. Charles and Geneva, a brief EF-0 tornado spun up just north of Route 38 east of Peck Road. The tornado tracked southeastward to just southeast of the intersection of Randall Road and Route 38, causing roof damage to a Metro Self Storage building, damaging a greenhouse and tossing shopping cart corrals around at a Meijer, knocking over a light pole, and snapping and uprooting multiple trees. Damage beyond the Tri-City Shopping Center then appeared to transition to straight-line wind damage. |
4.) La Grange to Cicero Tornado
(click on image to enlarge) |
Summary: An EF-0 tornado began in La Grange and tracked through Brookfield, Riverside, and Berwyn before ending in Cicero. Damage along the tornado`s path was entirely confined to trees. |
5.) Chicago Tornado: Midway Airport to Kenwood
(click on image to enlarge) |
Summary: An EF-0 tornado began at Midway Airport and tracked east-northeastward through the West Elsdon, Gage Park, New City, and Fuller Park community areas of Chicago, where it primarily caused tree and minor roof damage to homes. The tornado then crossed I-90/I-94, producing additional instances of tree damage as it tracked through the Grand Boulevard and Kenwood community areas before it tracked out over Lake Michigan. Just as the tornado was about to spin up, surveillance video at Midway Airport showed strong winds turning a 737 airplane clockwise 90 degrees, causing its left wing to slam into the jet bridge that it was stationed at. |
6.) Chicago Tornado: Englewood to Jackson Park
(click on image to enlarge) |
Summary: An EF-0 tornado began near Englewood STEM High School and tracked east-northeastward through the south side of Chicago before moving over Lake Michigan at Jackson Park. The tornado primarily caused tree damage along its 3.6 mile long track, though it also knocked over a train car and caused some minor roof damage as well. |
7.) Leeds to Long Point Tornado
(click on image to enlarge) |
Summary: High-resolution satellite imagery indicates that a tornado began near the intersection of N 7th Road and E 10th Road in La Salle County and tracked east-southeastward for about 4.2 miles, causing damage to crops. The damage was most pronounced near the start of the track between E 10th Road and E 11th Road, where a clear and continuous damage path was evident in the crops, with crop damage becoming more sporadic and subtle farther to the east. The last instance of crop damage appeared to occur just west of N 200 East Road and south of E 2800 North Road in Livingston County, just north of Long Point. Because this tornado did not cause damage to any qualified damage indicators, it has been assigned an EF-Unknown (EF-U) rating. |
8.) Dana Tornado
(click on image to enlarge) |
Summary: High-resolution satellite imagery indicates that a tornado began near E 10th Road between N 4th Road and N 5th Road in La Salle County and tracked southeastward for about 4 miles, carving out a damage path across crops. The last instance of crop damage appeared to occur just south of E 2400 North Road between N 100 East Road and N 200 East Road in Livingston County. Because this tornado did not cause damage to any qualified damage indicators, it has been assigned an EF-Unknown (EF-U) rating. |
9.) Ancona/Long Point Tornado
(click on image to enlarge) |
Summary: High-resolution satellite imagery indicates that as the Leeds-Long Point tornado was ending, a new tornado began near the intersection of N 200 East Road and E 2800 North Road north of Long Point and southwest of Ancona. This tornado tracked southeastward for almost 2 miles, carving out a damage path across crops before ending just west of N 400 East Road. |
DeKalb, Kane, and DuPage County Straight-Line Winds
(click on image to enlarge) |
Summary: A corridor of strong straight-line winds started near DeKalb and continued through Cortland, Maple Park, Elburn, Lily Lake, Campton Hills, St. Charles, Geneva, West Chicago, and surrounding areas. Damage across this corridor consisted of widespread downed trees, downed power lines, blown down crops, and multiple instances of structural damage. In addition, a few tornadoes occurred within the swath of damaging winds. Peak winds were estimated near 90 mph. |
La Salle and Livingston County Straight-Line Winds
(click on image to enlarge) |
Summary: A corridor of strong straight-line winds began in Marshall County and continued into far southern La Salle and western and southern Livingston counties. Damage across the area consisted of widespread downed trees, blown down crops, and damage to multiple farm outbuildings. In addition, several tornadoes occurred within the swath of damaging winds. Peak winds were estimated near 80 mph. |
The Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale classifies tornadoes into the following categories:
EF0 Weak 65-85 mph |
EF1 Moderate 86-110 mph |
EF2 Significant 111-135 mph |
EF3 Severe 136-165 mph |
EF4 Extreme 166-200 mph |
EF5 Catastrophic 200+ mph |
When a tornado is known to have occurred but does not cause damage to any qualified damage indicators, or if the only damage is located in an area that is inaccessible to NWS storm survey personnel, then a tornado may be assigned the EF-Unknown (EF-U) rating.
