Fast Facts:

  • Shortly after 2 PM on Sunday, August 28th, strong to severe thunderstorms rolled across portions of northern Illinois. 
  • These storms were aided by a "Mesoscale Convective Vortex", which is a term referring to an area of low pressure aloft that is reinforced or augmented by earlier convection. 
  • These thunderstorms produced scattered wind damage, with somewhat more concentrated swaths of damage and heavy rainfall occurring across central DeKalb County. 
  • Storms exited the region through the mid evening hours, though another round of severe storms was experienced across part of the region the next day, Monday, August 29th.
