November 2020 will, at least in part, be remembered for its prolonged mild start across the Midwest. For the local area, this brought daily records as well as provided a remarkable stretch of 70 degree days, which is a record for this late in a calendar year.

The 76 observed on November 8 and November 9 were tied with two other days for 8th warmest November day on record. The 76 highs also were the warmest November temperatures since 1978 (79 on November 5, 1978). The warmest November high temperature on record is 81 on November 1, 1950.
Regarding record high minimum temperatures (warmest lows), the reading of 63 degrees on Monday November 9th broke the daily record of 59 from 1999. This also tied the all time November high minimum temperature of 63 from November 6, 1924 and November 7, 1975.
LATE SEASON STRETCH OF HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE 70S
Chicago averages one November day in the 70s. In this remarkable stretch of warmth, there were seven consecutive highs in the 70s.
- The seven 70s in a row is the longest stretch of 70s in November, surpassing five 70s in a row on November 15-19, 1953.
- The latest run of six 70s in row had been October 27-November 1, 1950.
- The latest stretch of one straight week (seven consecutive days) of 70s is October 24-30, 1989, which actually began on the 23rd so eight straight days.
- Just to put into perspective how rare it is to have even a string of 70s this late, just four straight November days in the 70s has only occurred four times: 1938, 1953, 1978, and 2015.
NOVEMBER DAYS IN THE 70S
For the entire month of November, regardless if consecutive days:
- November 2020 has the most number of days in the 70s (7), now ahead of 1953 and 1975, which had six days in the 70s.
- Three Novembers had five days in the 70s: 1938, 1964, and 1999.
IN SUMMARY
While 70s have occurred as late in the season as early December (December 2, 1982 and December 3, 2012), having a stretch of 4 to 5 straight days this late averages out to about once every 35 years. A stretch of 7 days this late in a year had not been seen at the official Chicago observing site dating back to 1871.

The 77 observed on November 9 is tied with two other days for the 5th warmest November day on record. The 76 observed on November 6 was tied with three other days for 8th warmest November day. The warmest November high temperature on record is 81 on November 1, 1933.
Regarding record high minimum temperatures (warmest lows), the reading of 61 degrees on Monday November 9th broke the daily record of 57 from 1931. This also set the all time November high minimum temperature, breaking the previous record of 60 from November 1, 2016.
LATE SEASON STRETCH OF HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE 70S
Rockford reached eight consecutive highs in the 70s.
- Eight consecutive 70s in November, such as now observed from November 3-10, had not occurred during Rockford`s period of record.
- In fact, the previous record had only been four straight November days in the 70s. That had happened three times prior to this year: November 1-4, 1938, November 2-5, 1978, and November 2-6, 2008.
- The latest comparable runs of 70s in a row to this are October 26-November 1, 1924 (7 days) and October 19-26, 1963 (8 days).
NOVEMBER DAYS IN THE 70S
For the entire month of November, regardless if consecutive days:
- No November before November 2020 had seen five or more days in the 70s.
- Most 70s in November had been four days, occurring in 1924, 1938, 1978, 1999, and 2008.
IN SUMMARY
While 70s have occurred as late in the season as November 21, 1913, having a stretch of 5 plus days had not been observed in Rockford`s period of record dating back to 1906. This is the latest stretch of eight straight 70s by over two weeks.
