Light to moderate snow will continue into Saturday over the Great Lakes, Central Appalachians, and Northeast. This weekend into next week, a series of atmospheric rivers will bring gusty winds, periods of heavy rain, and mountain snow to northern California and the Pacific Northwest. Colder temperatures are in store for the weekend from the Great Lakes to East Coast. Read More >

A long-lived complex of wind producing storms known as a derecho moved across central and eastern Iowa, northern Illinois, and northern Indiana on June 24th. This lasted over 250 miles (and over six hours) and had a consistent swath of severe winds (58+ mph), qualifying it as a derecho. The initial driving force behind this complex was a subtle low pressure at around 15,000 ft in the atmosphere, and a sharp increase in westerly wind speeds at that level. This helped trigger the first storms along a surface stationary front. Robust instability from moisture and warmth built ahead of the initial storms in Iowa during the afternoon to help fuel them, as well as enhance the low-level wind threat. As the storms congealed and became more organized the atmosphere was favorable for them to drive themselves, and basically create their own local environment. That is they created a large cold pool of rain-cooled air under the storms, and this dense cooler air propagated with the storms aiding the strong winds. There were further enhanced by a classic rear-inlow jet, which basically helped those stronger winds at 10-15,000 ft mentioned earlier to work their way near the surface.

Below is a radar loop of the MCS through the area. The radar signatures are all ideal for strong winds, especially along and near the apex of the bow. The reflectivity gradient at the front is very sharp and quickly moving, all indicative of strong winds and sustainability. Note also little "hooks" on the front edge indicative of meso-vorticies, where brief tornadoes or at least enhanced winds were more favored. On the back side of the complex, you'll note a backwards "C-shaped" drying of reflectivity, indicative of a rear-inflow jet, a feature that can enhance the low-level winds and help sustain them for a longer period of time.

This graphic is dervied from the Doppler radar indicated rotation. Note the two long-lived rotation areas from south of the Quad Cities across north central Illinois. These rotational areas were rarely very strong, and were not in the most favored environments for tornadoes. Where these increased in intensity (pinks and white colors) is where there existed greater concern for possible tornadoes. |
