Light to moderate snow will continue into Saturday over the Great Lakes, Central Appalachians, and Northeast. This weekend into next week, a series of atmospheric rivers will bring gusty winds, periods of heavy rain, and mountain snow to northern California and the Pacific Northwest. PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CHICAGO IL 1031 PM CDT MON MAY 7 2012 /1131 PM EDT MON MAY 7 2012/ ...DAMAGE SURVEY RESULTS OF THE MAY 6TH STORMS FROM IROQUOIS COUNTY... THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CONDUCTED A SURVEY OF DAMAGE ACROSS IROQUOIS COUNTY IN EAST CENTRAL ILLINOIS THAT WAS EXPERIENCED DURING THE STORMS ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON. ONE TORNADO WAS DISCOVERED AMONGST WIND DAMAGE THROUGHOUT THE GENERAL WATSEKA AREA. THE FOLLOWING ARE THE DETAILED RESULTS. ----------------------------------------------------------------- ...EF-1 TORNADO SOUTHEAST OF WATSEKA... EVENT...EF1 TORNADO. MAXIMUM WINDS...85 TO 95 MPH. PATH LENGTH...1.5 MILES. LOCATION...2.5 MILES EAST SOUTHEAST OF WATSEKA TO 4 MILES EAST SOUTHEAST OF WATSEKA. MAXIMUM WIDTH...ESTIMATED TO BE APPROXIMATELY 100 TO 200 YARDS. TIME...ESTIMATED BETWEEN 4:48 PM AND 4:54 PM PER ACCOUNTS AND RADAR IMAGERY. DAMAGE...TWO FARMSTEADS EXPERIENCED ALMOST ALL OF THE DAMAGE WITH THIS TORNADO...WITH THREE OTHERS HAVING SOME TREE DAMAGE. A SMALL BARN WAS DESTROYED WITH ITS CINDER BLOCK WALLS TOPPLED AND ROOF THROWN ONE HALF MILE. MULTIPLE OUTBUILDINGS HAD MAINLY MINOR DAMAGE. ONE UTILITY POLE WAS DOWNED. REMARKS...AT ONE OF THE FARMSTEADS THERE WERE SEVERAL IMPALED OBJECTS...INCLUDING PIECES OF WOOD INTO A CAMPER AND THE GROUND...AS WELL AS A STOP SIGN INTO THE SOIL OF AN UPROOTED TREE BASE. COMPLEXITIES...THIS SURVEY WAS COMPLEX WITH THE TORNADO WITHIN A GENERAL AREA OF WIDESPREAD STRONG...AND AT TIMES SEVERE...STRAIGHT- LINE WINDS. MANY OF THE ACCOUNTS FROM CITIZENS NEAR THE DAMAGE AREA MENTIONED SEEING ROTATION WITHIN THE CLOUDS AT SOME POINT...ALTHOUGH THERE WERE AREA REPORTS OF WIDESPREAD DUST AND APPARENT WEAK GUSTNADOES IN IN ADVANCE OF STRONG WINDS AND ZERO VISIBILITY WITHIN HEAVY RAIN SOON AFTER THAT. THERE APPEARED TO BE STORM INTERACTION BASED ON RADAR IN THIS AREA THAT HELPED TO DEVELOP A TORNADO NEAR THE FRONT EDGE OF THE STRONG WINDS. HISTORY...THIS WAS THE FIRST TORNADO IN IROQUOIS COUNTY SINCE AN EF0 OCCURRED NEAR CISSNA PARK ON JUNE 21ST 2010. ----------------------------------------------------------------- ...STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS ALONG U.S. HIGHWAY 24... EVENT...STRAIGHT-LINE WINDS. MAXIMUM WINDS...APPROXIMATELY 100 MPH. AREA...A 3 MILE NARROW SWATH. LOCATION...IMMEDIATELY ALONG U.S. HIGHWAY 24 FROM 2.5 MILES EAST OF CRESCENT CITY TO 1 MILE WEST OF WATSEKA. TIME...ESTIMATED AT APPROXIMATELY 4:35-4:40 PM PER ACCOUNTS AND RADAR IMAGERY. DAMAGE...APPROXIMATELY FIFTY 70-FOOT HIGH UTILITY POLES WERE BLOWN OVER TO THE EAST SOUTHEAST ACROSS A RAILROAD LINE IMMEDIATELY TO THE NORTH OF U.S. HIGHWAY 24. SEVERAL WERE SNAPPED. A FEW LARGE TREES ALSO NEAR THE RAILROAD WERE DOWNED. ------------------------------------------------------------------ ...THROUGHOUT WATSEKA... ACROSS THE TOWN OF WATSEKA THERE WAS FOUND TO BE SCATTERED SEVERE WIND DAMAGE. WIND SPEEDS LIKELY APPROACHED 80 MPH AT TIMES BASED ON THE SIZE OF SOME OF THE LARGE TREES DOWNED AND A FEW UTILITY POLES DOWNED. THERE WAS ALSO SOME MINOR ROOF DAMAGE TO A FEW BUILDINGS. ------------------------------------------------------------------- ...NEAR ASHKUM...DANFORTH...AND GILMAN...AND NORTH OF WATSEKA... THE NWS STORM SURVEY TEAM FOUND NO SIGNS OF DAMAGE IN THESE AREAS DESPITE LOW-LEVEL ROTATION ON RADAR AND REPORTS OF ROTATION AND FUNNEL CLOUDS. ------------------------------------------------------------------ THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WOULD LIKE TO THANK IROQUOIS COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT FOR THEIR ASSISTANCE WITH THE SURVEY...ALONG WITH MULTIPLE CITIZENS FOR SHARING THEIR ACCOUNTS OF THE EVENT. $$ FRIEDLEIN/GILLEN/POULOS/VOSS
