...DAMAGE SURVEY FROM SEVERE WEATHER OF MONDAY OCT 2...

ON TUESDAY OCTOBER 3RD...METEOROLOGISTS FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER
SERVICE SURVEYED STORM DAMAGE FROM SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS THAT
OCCURRED MONDAY. THE AREAS SURVEYED INCLUDED HICKORY
HILLS...BRIDGEVIEW AND PALOS HILLS IN SOUTHERN COOK COUNTY...AND IN
CENTRAL WILL COUNTY BETWEEN MANHATTAN AND PEOTONE.

THE MOST SIGNIFICANT STRUCTURAL DAMAGE WAS OBSERVED IN HICKORY HILLS
AND BRIDGEVIEW. AT THE INTERSECTION OF ROBERTS ROAD AND 97TH STREET
IN HICKORY HILLS...A LARGE SECTION OF THE GYMNASIUM ROOF OF CONRADY
JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL WAS BLOWN INTO A PARKING LOT ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF
THE BUILDING...OVERTURNING A SERVICE VAN WHICH WAS IN THE PARKING
LOT. DEBRIS AND INSULATION WAS ALSO CARRIED INTO HOUSES IMMEDIATELY
ACROSS THE STREET TO THE SOUTH OF THE SCHOOL. SEVERAL HOMES ALONG
97TH STREET RECEIVED DAMAGE FROM FALLING TREES AND TREE LIMBS. TREE
DAMAGE...AS WELL AS ADDITIONAL MINOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE WAS NOTED FOR
SEVERAL BLOCKS ON THE SOUTH AND SOUTHEAST SIDES OF HICKORY HILLS.

IN BRIDGEVIEW...STRUCTURAL DAMAGE WAS NOTED TO WAREHOUSE BUILDINGS
IN AN INDUSTRIAL PARK ALONG 100TH PLACE...WEST OF HARLEM AVENUE. ONE
BUILDING OF CINDER BLOCK CONSTRUCTION WITH A BRICK FACADE SUFFERED
PARTIAL COLLAPSE OF THE NORTH AND EAST WALLS. ADDITIONAL MINOR
DAMAGE WAS NOTED AT BRIDGEVIEW FIRE STATION NUMBER 2...ALSO ALONG
100TH PLACE.

IN CENTRAL WILL COUNTY...SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE WAS OBSERVED TO A LARGE
METAL GRAIN SILO...ALONG US ROUTE 45 ROUGHLY 5 MILES SOUTHEAST OF
MANHATTAN. SIGNIFICANT STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO A LARGE METAL POLE BARN
WAS OBSERVED APPROXIMATELY 4 MILES EAST OF MANHATTAN.

THE DEBRIS SPREAD FROM ALL OF THESE LOCATIONS APPEARED TO BE THE
RESULT OF STRAIGHT LINE WINDS FROM THE NORTH...WITH THE STRUCTURAL
DAMAGE SUGGESTIVE OF WIND SPEEDS IN A RANGE FROM 80 TO 110 MPH. THIS
WAS LIKELY THE RESULT OF A MICROBURST ALONG THE LEADING EDGE OF A
LINE OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WHICH MOVED FROM NORTH TO SOUTH ACROSS
THE AREA THE EVENING OF OCTOBER 2ND.

MANY OTHER AREAS ACROSS NORTHEAST ILLINOIS AND NORTHWEST INDIANA
RECEIVED TREE DAMAGE AND FLOODING MONDAY EVENING. ESPECIALLY HARD
HIT AREAS INCLUDED PORTIONS OF CREST HILL AND JOLIET IN WILL COUNTY
WHERE EXTENSIVE TREE DAMAGE OCCURRED.
