April got off to a rocky start this year. Thirty minutes after the month began, a small EF-1 tornado briefly touched down on the far east side of Louisville just outside the Gene Snyder Expressway along Old Henry Road. The twister stayed on the ground for four minutes and produced mostly tree damage, though there was some minor structural damage as well. This tornado was part of a huge severe weather outbreak that mostly affected the Midwest and Mid South, with over 100 tornadoes. Southern Indiana and central Kentucky got by relatively unscathed with just the one tornado and some scattered wind damage.

The next severe weather event took place just a few days later during the afternoon and evening hours of the 5th. Five EF-1 tornadoes developed from Perry and Meade Counties into Jefferson County, with three of the tornadoes occurring in the Louisville Metro. Fortunately all of the tornadoes were very short-lived (each of the five paths were under a mile) and there were no injuries. One of the tornadoes occurred close to Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport where a 79 mph wind gust was recorded.

After that busy start, there was no further severe weather during the month, and this April ended up drier than normal across the area.

The final week of April turned quite cool. Some locations dipped into the 30s each day from the 22nd to the 26th. At sunrise on the 24th several places dropped into the 20s, with Brandenburg falling all the way down to 26°.
