Severe Thunderstorm Threat From the Central Plains to the Northeast; Extreme HeatRisk for the East Coast

Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible from the central Plains to the Northeast through this evening. Widespread damaging winds are the primary threat but hail and a tornado or two is also possible. The Western Kentucky University Meteorology Program hosted NWS Louisville and NWS Nashville for a Professional Development Series on Wednesday evening (Oct 23). Meteorologists John Gordon, Evan Webb, and Samantha Carr from NWS Louisville presented various topics to students, including applications of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) in operational meteorology, and perspective on what a new meteorologist's first year in the National Weather Service is like. In addition, John Gordon gave an eye opening presentation about what it takes to get into the NWS. Students also were given advice on how best to construct their resumes.
