Synoptic Upper Air Charts
300mb chart. A strong upper level jet extends from the Central Plains northward into the Great Lakes with a 125kt maximum noted over TX/OK and over MN. | 500mb chart. A deep closed low was analyzed over ND/SD. | 850mb chart. Deep low pressure system located over ND with moisture-rich air advecting northward from the Gulf of Mexico into the Ohio Valley. |
Surface
WPC Surface Analysis 14APR22 00Z. A strong occluded low pressure system is noted over ND with a N-S oriented cold front extending roughly along the Mississippi River. | Temperatures, dew points, and mean sea level pressure. Red contours and shading depict warm, moist air flowing north ahead of the cold front. | Precipitable Water. This is a measure of atmospheric moisture. Per SPC sounding climatology, 1.2 inches is roughly the 90th percentile for April 14 00Z. 1.5 inches is the daily maximum. |
Wind Shear
Effective bulk shear. Values greater than 25kt are significant. This map shows values of 55kt to 60kt over portions of central KY and southern Indiana including Louisville and Bowling Green. | Effective Storm Relative Helicity (ESRH) and storm motion. This map indicates strong shear.. | 0-1km storm relative helicity and storm motion. Values greater than 100 m2/s2 are significant for the possibility of tornadoes. |
Instability
Surface-Based Convective Available Potential Energy (SBCAPE). Values of SBCAPE are between 1000-1500 J/kg across central Kentucky. In addition to providing fuel for thunderstorms, SBCAPE allows for severe winds (straight-line winds and tornadoes) to reach the ground. | Lapse Rates in the 700-500 mb layer. Lapse Rates are between 6-7 degrees Celsius per km of altitude across central Kentucky and southern Indiana. Steep lapse rates contribute to increased hail potential as well as overall strength of the thunderstorms. | Lifting Condensation Level (LCL) Heights. LCL Heights are generally between 1000-1500 meters across central Kentucky and southern Indiana. Lower (typically less than 1000 m) LCL heights are beneficial to tornado development and regeneration. |
