Rain Providing Some Relief to Drought-Stricken Southern U.S.

A storm tracking across the southern U.S. will continue to bring heavy to excessive rainfall over portions of central Texas through the central Gulf Coast today. The Southeast U.S. will see heavier rain and a risk for severe thunderstorms Saturday. While much of this rainfall will be beneficial to the drought, excessive rainfall may bring areas of flash and urban flooding. Read More >

Current radar loop for Houston, TX.
A Flood Watch will be in effect from 3 AM Friday - 4 AM Saturday for much of southeast Texas. Periods of showers and storms will produce localized high rain rates and the potential for several inches of rain in a short time period. Heavy rain may lead to flooding of low-lying areas, rivers/creeks, and roads. Most likely rainfall amounts between 2-4”, with isolated higher amounts of 6" or more possible.
Periods of showers and thunderstorms are expected through Friday night, with the greatest coverage during the day Friday into early Friday evening. Locally heavy rainfall is likely. A Slight Risk (level 2 of 4) of excessive rainfall is in place for most of the area. Minor street flooding is the most likely impact, but a few instances of flash flooding are possible if training heavy rainfall occurs.
Widespread rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are expected. Reasonable high end amounts of 5 to 6 inches are possible.
A stalled boundary along the coast is expected to bring widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms on Friday. An isolated strong to severe storm will be possible south of I-10, where a Marginal Risk (level 1 of 5) is present. Potential impacts include damaging wind gusts, large hail, and the possibility of an isolated tornado.
A Gale Warning is in effect for the bays and coastal waters for Friday through Saturday morning. Strong north winds will develop with gusts up to 40 knots. Seas will build to 6 to 9 feet nearshore, 9 to 13 feet offshore.
