Rain Coming to Drought-Stricken Southern U.S.

A storm tracking across the Southern U.S. will bring heavy to excessive rainfall over portions of west-central Texas into tonight then from central Texas through the central Gulf Coast on Friday. Periods of showers and thunderstorms are expected today through early Saturday, with the greatest coverage Friday afternoon into Friday night. Locally heavy rainfall and training storms are possible. A Marginal Risk (level 1 of 4) for Excessive Rainfall is present today north of I-10, increasing to a Slight Risk (level 2 of 4) Friday into early Saturday for most of the area. Total estimated amounts are generally 1 to 3 inches, primarily north of I-10. Minor street flooding is the most likely impact, but a few instances of flash flooding are possible if training heavy rainfall occurs.
Widespread 1 to 3 inches, isolated higher amounts possible. The location of heavy rain will depend on the exact location of the boundary.
A stalled boundary along the coast is expected to bring widespread showers and isolated thunderstorms on Friday, with the greatest coverage in the afternoon. An isolated strong to severe storm will be possible south of I-10, where a Marginal Risk (level 1 of 5) is present. Potential impacts include damaging wind gusts, large hail, and the possibility of an isolated tornado.
A stalled boundary is creating a large temperature gradient across the area today, with cool temperatures expected north of I-10 (highs 71-81°F) and warm/humid conditions south of I-10 (highs 82-87°F), where heat indices may reach 90-95°F. Scattered showers and isolated storms, with potential for isolated downpours, are possible north of I-10.
The stalled frontal boundary will remain over the region tonight, leading to mostly overcast skies and the possibility of isolated showers or storms. Forecast low temperatures are 55-63°F north of I-10 and 65-71°F south of I-10.
Warm weather continues today, but cooler conditions are expected this weekend into the start of next week before warmer weather returns by midweek next week. Rain chances are high Friday into Saturday morning, then dry conditions are expected through the start of next week. Slight chance of rainfall returns by midweek.
