Severe Thunderstorms for the Center of the Nation; Fire Weather Concerns; Flooding Issues for the Great Lakes Region

A round of severe thunderstorms are forecast across areas of the Southern Plains, Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes this afternoon and tonight; The threat for flash flooding will also accompany these storms. Today will be warm with highs in the low to mid 80s. Skies will be mostly cloudy through the day with winds increasing this afternoon. South winds of 10-20 mph and gusts of 25-30 mph are possible.
Overnight lows will drop into the upper 60s/low 70s. Clouds will stick around tonight but rain is not expected.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected along and ahead of a cold front that pushes into Southeast Texas Saturday afternoon/evening. Locally heavy rainfall is possible. Marginal Risk (level 1 of 4) of Excessive Rainfall for areas along I-10 northward to a Brenham-Huntsville line. Locally heavy rainfall could lead to instances of minor flooding, especially in low-lying areas and areas with poor drainage. Rainfall rates may peak in the 2-3+ inches per hour range.
For the Southeast Texas Gulf Coast, expect generally south to southeasterly winds around 10-20 knots with gusts around 15-25 knots and seas of 3-5 feet through Saturday. A cold front will push off the coast this weekend, bringing showers and thunderstorms as it passes. Strong northeast winds around 20-30 knots, higher gusts to around 35 knots and seas of 6-10 feet may develop in the wake of the cold front.
