Key Points For Sioux Falls Storm Damage

  • A line of severe thunderstorms produced significant damage across the greater Sioux Falls metro late Tuesday evening and overnight. 
  • One tornado has been confirmed so far. The report was received by the NWS at 11:38 pm CDT. Estimated time of touchdown is 11:25 pm CDT.
  • The first Tornado Warning for northern Lincoln County, including the southern portions of Sioux Falls, was issued at 11:04 pm. The remainder of Sioux Falls was placed in a Tornado Warning at 11:27 pm. 
  • A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for Sioux Falls at 11:13 pm. The warning mentioned the potential for 80 mph winds and was later increased to 90 mph at 11:27 pm. 
  • A Flash Flood Warning was issued at 11:26 pm CDT for Sioux Falls.
  • The NWS in Sioux Falls has a survey team out as of Wednesday morning to assess the damage and determine the track, timing and intensity of the tornado or tornadoes around Sioux Falls. 

Forecast Concerns for Late Wednesday and Wednesday Night

  • There is a risk of additional thunderstorms by late afternoon into the overnight hours. Much of the region has been placed in a 'Slight Risk' (2 out of 5 on the scale) from the Storm Prediction Center.
  • There is also a risk of additional heavy rainfall with a Flash Flood Watch in effect. The risk for heavy rain would be from 7 pm to 7 am.
  • Please have multiple reliable ways to receive any warning information. Some examples include NOAA Weather Radio, commercial radio, cell phones, and outdoor warning sirens. 

Initial Storm Reports Summary

From the evening of Tuesday, September 10, 2019, into the early morning of Wednesday, September 11th, a line of severe thunderstorms moved across southeast South Dakota, northeast Nebraska, northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota. This line produced numerous reports of wind damage and heavy rainfall, as well as multiple tornadoes. The exact number of tornadoes will be determined through damage surveys later today. Below is a map and list of preliminary reports. A more complete event summary will be completed later today or Thursday.
