The first winter storm of the season dumped as much as 12 to 18 inches of snow across the region. Snow developed shortly before daybreak on the 20th of November, and quickly spread northward. A narrow band of heavy snow developed along and south of the Interstate 90 corridor, producing as much as 2 to 3" of snow per hour. (What causes bands of heavy snow?) This heavy snow caused travel conditions to deteriorate quickly during the day, with traffic becoming dangerous for much of the Tri-State area.
This storm system would slowly rotate southeast into Iowa in the afternoon and evening hours, producing heavy snow across much of the state. When all was said and done, snow amounts as high as 18 inches were reported in the immediate vicinity of Sioux Falls. The 7.2" of snow at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport broke the daily record of 3.8" which was set back in 1975. In Sioux City, 5.7" of snow broke the daily record of 2.5" set back in 1975.
The daily snowfall of 7.2" in Sioux Falls was the 9th highest 1-day snow total for the month of November on record! A similar story can be said in Sioux City. The 5.7" of snow reported on the 20th was also the 9th highest 1-day snow total for the month of November
