Understanding the Forecast Cone

As of 10 pm, Isaias has just been updated to a hurricane with now sustained winds of 75 mph. It is located across the Southwestern Gulf and moving to the east-northeast at 9 mph. Some model uncertainties still exist regarding timing, intensity, and exact track, so refinements to the forecast will continue to be applied. Central Alabama effects will include heavy rainfall and gusty winds from Friday night into Saturday. Continue to check the latest forecasts from official sources. Start considering preparations for power outages and flooding.

There is a risk for scattered downed trees, power outages, and flooding for Central Alabama. Stock 2-3 days of food, water, and medications; flashlights and batteries; kids’ entertainment; charge phones and tablets. Ensure you have items that meet YOUR needs. Keep generators at least 20 feet from windows/doors to prevent fatal carbon monoxide poisoning. Do not touch or clear trees entangled with powerlines; notify your local utility or emergency services. Never cross flooded roadways.

Through 7 AM, conditions will be clear in the northwest to partly cloudy across the southeast portions of Central Alabama. Early morning low temperatures will be in the 50s. Winds will be variable at 5 mph or less.

Today will be mostly sunny early across Central Alabama, then look for increasing cloudiness this afternoon. Daytime high temperatures will be in the 80s to the lower 90s. Winds will be from the northeast at 5 to 10 mph.

For tonight conditions will be partly cloudy northwest to mostly cloudy southeast across Central Alabama. Overnight low temperatures will be in the upper 50s to the lower 60s. Winds will be out of the northeast to east around 5 mph.

Conditions Friday will be partly cloudy northwest to mostly cloudy southeast across Central Alabama, with a chance of showers by afternoon. Daytime high temperatures will be from the upper 70s southeast to the upper 80s west. Winds will be from the east. In the north values will be 5 to 15 mph & gusty. In the south values will be 10 to 20 mph & gusty.
