An active weather pattern at the beginning of 2024 continued off and on through March with several bouts of winter weather in between periods of very dry and warm weather. A near-normal snowpack in March deteriorated through April and May as high winds, critical fire weather, and only brief periods of rain and snow moved across the area. Very hot and dry weather in early June turned significantly more active by late June with widespread showers and storms producing heavy rainfall, flash flooding, and severe weather. Wildfires that developed around Ruidoso in mid June resulted in major burn scar flash flooding by late June. The monsoon season was fitful with spotty heavy rainfall and record heat at times. Drought conditions did however improve very slowly throughout the summer. The second half of September into October was warm and dry again. November was another very active month with a major winter storm producing heavy snowfall and flooding rains. December was again warm and dry. High terrain snowpack that saw a major early season boost in November retreated through the end of December. Please enjoy our 2024 "Hydrology & Drought Status Review" for details on flooding, drought, snowpack, spring runoff, and reservoir levels.
