...A Look Back at the Climate for Meteorological Summer
(June, July, August) 2016 for Chicago and Rockford...

At Chicago, the average high temperature for the summer season
was 83.5 degrees, which is 1.6 degrees above the 1981 to 2010
average. The average low temperature was 65.0 degrees, which is
3.3 degrees above normal. The mean temperature for the season was
74.3 degrees, which is 2.5 degrees above normal.

A total of 13.34 inches of precipitation was recorded during this
past summer, which is 1.29 inches above normal.

Records established or tied during the summer months:

June: Record daily precipitation of 1.31 inches on the 22nd.

July: None.

August: None.

At Rockford, the average high temperature was 83.8 degrees, which
is 1.1 degree above normal. The average low temperature was 63.6
degrees, which is 2.6 degrees above normal. The mean temperature
for the season was 73.7 degrees, which is 1.9 degrees above normal.

A total of 14.36 inches of precipitation was recorded during this
past summer, which was 1.17 inches above normal.

Records established or tied during the summer months:

June: None.

July: No daily records. 7th wettest July on record with 7.87
inches.

August: None.

...A Look Back at the Climate for the Month of August 2016 for
Chicago and Rockford...

At Chicago, the average high temperature was 84.3 degrees, which
is 2.4 degrees above normal. The average low temperature was 67.4
degrees, which is 4.5 degrees above normal. The average temperature
for the month was 75.8 degrees which is 3.4 degrees above normal.
During the month of August, 4.26 inches of precipitation were
recorded, which is 0.64 inches below normal.

There were no records set during the month of August 2016 for
Chicago.

At Rockford, the average high temperature was 83.7 degrees, which
is 1.3 degrees above normal. The average low temperature was 65.4
degrees, which is 4.1 degrees above normal. The average temperature
for the month was 74.5 degrees, which is 2.6 degrees above normal.
During the month of August, 4.30 inches of precipitation were
recorded, which is 0.29 inches below normal.

There were no records set during the month of August 2016 for
Rockford.

  • June 14-15, 2016: Heavy rainfall and scattered wind damage in north central IL
  • June 22, 2016:  Over a dozen tornadoes in northern IL, including an EF-2 near Marseilles to Seneca, IL and in Pontiac, IL
  • July 6, 2016:  Isolated wind damage and 2 to 3" of rain in north central IL
  • July 7, 2016:  Localized heavy rainfall in northeast IL & northwest IN causes spotty flooding
  • July 13, 2016:  Severe winds along and south of I-80 with a picturesque sky afterward
  • July 17, 2016:  EF-1 tornado near Cabery, IL in Ford County and 2 to 6" of rain
  • July 21-24, 2016: Humid and hot weather brings multiple days of storms, with scattered wind damage in Chicago and flash flooding in Belvidere
  • July 29, 2016:  Flash flooding near the I-88 corridor including parts of the west and south Chicago metro
  • August 9, 2016:  Weak landspout tornado on the southwest side of Chicago
  • August 12-20, 2016:  Multiple 4+" rain episodes including in Dixon, Kankakee, Lowell, and Plainfield
  • August 28, 2016:  Flash flooding from 4" to over 6" in Braceville and Odell, IL and near Hebron, IN
  • August 29, 2016:  Isolated very heavy rainfall brings flooding in Belvidere, Mendota, and Triumph, IL
