2016 Iowa Tornadoes

Above is a map of the tornadoes that occurred across Iowa in 2016. Mouse over each icon to view more information on that tornado, which will appear in the box to the right. A season summary and table of these tornadoes is provided below. Detailed KMZ files for many of the tracks can be downloaded and viewed in Google Earth by clicking on the appropriate icon in the table below. Please note: Track lines and contours are often interpolated and may not encompass the full extent of the damage. Surveying procedures vary between NWS offices. Downloadable tracks may not be available for weak tornadoes that were not surveyed.

2016 Iowa Tornado Summary

A total of 33 tornadoes have occurred so far in Iowa through August 7. All but nine tornadoes have been rated EF-0, with seven of these nine being rated EF-1 and the last two tornadoes coming in at an EF-2. The season started on March 15 with three tornadoes in far eastern Iowa (part of a larger outbreak that impacted Iowa and Illinois), but remained quiet until April 27 when five weak tornadoes tracked across southwest Iowa. Another round of weak tornadoes were spread across central and eastern Iowa on May 9. The remainder of May and June featured a smattering of short-lived and/or weak tornadoes, including two highly visible tornadoes in far western Iowa on June 29. A strong squall line produced five tornadoes across eastern Iowa on July 17 (tied with April 27 for the most tornadoes in a single day for 2016). Two of these tornadoes were rated EF-2 and damaged multiple structures and caused nine injuries. Another squall line on July 23 produced three tornadoes over eastern Iowa, including one over Lake Delhi that produced tree damage along the lake. Four landspout tornadoes rounded out the month of July in northern Iowa. August 4 would witness a highly visible landspout/waterspout over Lake Manawa on the south side of Council Bluffs.
