Rare Southern U.S. Winter Storm; Dangerous Cold Weather For Much of the Eastern U.S.; Critical Fire Weather for Southern California

A rare winter storm impacting the Southern U.S. will move offshore Wednesday morning. Behind the storm, arctic air will continue encompassing the eastern two-thirds of the Nation with only a slow return to normal temperatures expected by the end of the week. On the afternoon and evening of May 6th numerous thunderstorms spawned tornadoes across portions of north central KS and south central NE. Over 24 tornadoes were surveyed in these areas with the highest rating of EF3 near Munden, KS. In fact, 6 tornadoes tracked through Republic County in about a 3 hour period. A few of the thunderstorms continued eastward into the evening after sunset producing weaker tornadoes.

 

 

 

At one point in the event there were 4 tornadoes on the ground nearly simultaneously as seen in this radar image below.
