Heat Continues for the East and South-Central U.S.; Strong to Severe Storms Across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast

The extremely dangerous heat wave continues across the East Coast and much of the South-Central U.S. today. Record high temperatures are expected for some areas especially across the Mid-Atlantic where extreme heat risk conditions reside. Statistics for Summer 2012 for Topeka

  

Summer temperatures were hot again this year for Topeka.  The average temperature from June through August was the ninth warmest on record, tying with that of 2010, and just over a degree cooler than 2011.  As is typical during a drought, the average high temperature was more extreme than the average low temperature.  High temperatures this summer averaged to be the third warmest on record, trailing the Dust Bowl years of 1936 and 1934, while the average low temperature was only the 38th warmest.  Twenty-four days saw the mercury reach at least 100 degrees, which ties for the sixth most of any summer.  Precipitation was much below normal, with a total of 7.75 inches measured, placing it as the eighteenth lowest total.
