Strong Winds and Light Snow - December 11th-12thNational Weather Service, Springfield, MO |
A powerful storm system affected much of the central United States on December 11th and 12th, 2010. A deep area of low pressure formed over the eastern Plains, and tracked east across the mid-Mississippi Valley. Across eastern Kansas and the Missouri Ozarks, a strong cold front swept across the region during the morning and early afternoon of December 11th. As that front passed, northwest winds increased to 25 to 35 MPH, with gusts between 35 at 45 MPH at many locations. The gusty winds continued through the overnight hours and into the day on the 12th, ushering in much colder temperatures, with wind chills dipping to near zero at many locations during the morning of the 12th.
In addition to the gusty winds, light snow began to overspread portions of the area very late on the 11th and into the early morning hours of the 12th. Snow accumulations ranged from between a trace and 1 inch in the Springfield area, to around 2 to 3 inches to the north and east in Rolla.
