Derecho - July 5th, 2004

National Weather Service, Springfield, MO

Event Summary

On July 5th, 2004, for the second day in a row a derecho, a line of thunderstorms that produces widespread damaging winds, moved across portions of the National Weather Service Springfield's area of responsibility.  This time the derecho tracked from southeast Kansas into central Missouri across the Lake of the Ozarks region.

Once again, widespread wind damage was reported as this system tracked across the area. Hundreds of trees and powerlines were uprooted and blown down. The Missouri communities of Hannon, Schell City, and Appleton City were all hit hard, with numerous trees uprooted, as well as structural damage, including a couple of mobile homes destroyed. The derecho then went on to strike the Truman State Park, where one fatality and numerous injuries were reported as large trees were blown down on the camp grounds.

As the storms continued eastward they produced several brief tornadoes in Miller county from east of Eldon to southeast of Etterville. Two of the tornadoes were rated F1, and the other produced F0 damage. There were no injuries reported in Miller county.
