Pacific Storms Continue to Impact the West; Severe Thunderstorms Forecast Thursday in the South

A series of Pacific storm systems will continue to impact the Northwest U.S. into this coming weekend with periods of gusty winds, high surf, low elevation rain, and heavy mountain snow. Very warm temperatures were experienced across south central and southeast Colorado through October of 2024, as upper level ridging dominated the weather through much of the month. However, one slow moving weather system through the middle of October brought abundant rain and higher elevation snow to the southern mountains and southern tier of Colorado. For the month of October as a whole, above to well above normal temperatures were experienced across region. At and above normal precipitation was experienced generally along and south of the Highway 50 Corridor, with generally below normal precipitation north of Highway 50 and across the far southeast Plains.

The preliminary average temperature in Alamosa for the past month of October was 48.7 degrees. This is 4.9 degrees above normal and makes October of 2024 the 4th warmest October on record in Alamosa. This is remain behind the warmest October of 1950, when the average monthly temperature was 49.5 degrees.  The average October maximum temperature in Alamosa was 68.4 degrees, which is 5.6 degrees above normal. The average October minimum temperature in Alamosa was 29.0 degrees, which is 4.2 degrees above normal.  Alamosa recorded 1.59 inches of precipitation through the month of October. This is 0.94 inches above normal and makes October of 2024 tied with October of 2006, as the 7th wettest October on record, well behind the 2.37 inches of precipitation recorded in 1969. Alamosa recorded 0.3 inches of snow in October, which is 1.9 inches below normal. The 1.59 inches of precipitation in October brings the year to date total in Alamosa up to 10.52 inches. This is 3.11 inches above the average annual precipitation in Alamosa and makes 2024 the 7th wettest year on record thus far (11.55 inches in 1969).  Alamosa set or tied 8 high temperature records in October, including 6 consecutive days to start the month, along with 1 record daily precipitation. (ALS POR: 1932-2024   

 

The preliminary average temperature in Colorado Springs for the past month of October was 57.2 degrees. This is 6.5 degrees above normal and makes October of 2024 the 4th warmest on record in Colorado Springs, still behind the warmest October of 1963 when the average monthly temperature was 58.2F. The average October maximum temperature in Colorado Springs was 72.5 degrees, which is 7.8 degrees above normal. The average October minimum temperature in Colorado Springs was 41.9 degrees, which is 5.3 degrees above normal.  Colorado Springs recorded 0.68 inches of precipitation through the month of October, which is 0.09 inches below normal. Colorado Springs recorded 1.2 inches of snow in October, which is 1.3 inches below normal. Colorado Springs set 2 daily record high temperatures in October, both of which set the record high monthly temperature for October of 88 degrees.  (COS POR: 1894-2024)     

 

The preliminary average temperature in Pueblo for the past month of October was 59.3 degrees. This 6.5 degrees above normal and makes October of 2024 the 4th warmest on record. This remains behind the warmest October of 1963 when the average monthly temperature was 61.0 degrees. The average October maximum temperature in Pueblo was 78.0 degrees, which is 8.3 degrees above normal. The average October minimum temperature in Pueblo was 40.7 degrees, which is 4.8 degrees above normal. Pueblo recorded 0.31 inches of precipitation through the month of October, which is 0.45 inches below normal. Pueblo recorded no snow in October, which is 1.9 inches below normal. Pueblo set 2 daily record high temperatures in October, one of which also tied the record high temperature for October of 94 degrees.  (PUB POR: 1888-2024)  

 

Looking ahead into November in Alamosa, the average high and low temperatures of 56 degrees and 18 degrees on November 1st, cool to 41 degrees and 6 degrees by the end of the month.  The average temperature for the month of November in Alamosa is 30.3 degrees.  Alamosa averages 0.37 inches of precipitation and 3.4 inches of snow through the month of November.         

In Colorado Springs, the average high and low temperatures of 59 degrees and 31 degrees on November 1st, cool to 47 degrees and 21 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of November in Colorado Springs is 39.5 degrees.  Colorado Springs averages 0.37 inches of precipitation and 4.4 inches of snow through the month of November.         

In Pueblo, the average high and low temperatures of 63 degrees and 29 degrees on November 1st, cool to 51 degrees and 19 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of November in Pueblo is 40.5 degrees. Pueblo averages 0.47 inches of precipitation and 4.1 inches of snow through the month of November.
