Heat Continues for the East and South-Central U.S.; Strong to Severe Storms Across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast

The extremely dangerous heat wave continues across the East Coast and much of the South-Central U.S. today. Record high temperatures are expected for some areas especially across the Mid-Atlantic where extreme heat risk conditions reside. June of 2023 was a cool and generally wet month, especially across southeast Colorado, where several storm systems brought record precipitation amounts for the month as a whole.  Colorado Springs recorded 9.62 inches of precipitation through the month of June, which not only set a record for the most precipitation in the month of June, but also becomes the wettest month ever in Colorado Springs, surpassing the 8.13 inches recorded in May of 2015.

The preliminary average temperature in Alamosa for the past month of June was 58.4 degrees. This is 2.2 degrees below normal and makes June of 2023 the 23rd coolest June on record in Alamosa. This is well behind the coldest June of 1945, when the average temperature was 55.6 degrees.  The average June maximum temperature in Alamosa was 77.3 degrees, which is 2.9 degrees below normal. The average June minimum temperature in Alamosa was 39.4 degrees, which is 1.5 degrees below normal.  Alamosa recorded 0.16 inches of precipitation through the month of June. This is 0.27 inches below normal and makes June of 2023 tied as the 23rd driest June on record.   

 

The preliminary average temperature in Colorado Springs for the past month of June was 63.9 degrees. This is 3.3 degrees below normal and makes June of 2023 the 50th coolest June on record in Colorado Springs. This is well below the coldest June of 1903, when the average temperature was 57.7 degrees.  The average June maximum temperature in Colorado Springs was 75.6 degrees, which is 6.0 degrees below normal. The average June minimum temperature in Colorado Springs was 52.1 degrees, which is 0.7 degrees below normal.  Colorado Springs recorded 9.62 inches of precipitation through the month of June. This is 7.35 inches above normal and makes June of 2023 the wettest June on record, surpassing the 8.00 inches recorded in June of 1965. The 9.62 inches recorded in June of 2023 also becomes the wettest month ever in Colorado Springs, surpassing the 8.13 inches recorded in May of 2015.  Colorado Springs set a daily precipitation record on June 12th, when 4.05 inches of rain was recorded. The 4.05 inches of rain that fell on June 12th becomes the 4th most precipitation recorded in one day in Colorado Springs, just behind 4.50 inches on September 14th, 2011, 4.29 inches on September 11th, 2008 and the 4.21 inches on April 15th, 1921.  Also, the total precipitation recorded over the June 11th and 12th timeframe was 5.52 inches and becomes the wettest 2 day period ever in Colorado  Springs, surpassing the 5.36 inches received between September 14th and 15th in 2011. 

 

The preliminary average temperature in Pueblo for the past month of June was 68.6 degrees. This is 3.2 degrees below normal and makes June of 2023 the 33rd coldest June on record. This is well behind the coldest June of 1903, when the average June temperature was 63.9 degrees.  The average June maximum temperature in Pueblo was 83.1 degrees, which is 5.5 degrees below normal. The average June minimum temperature in Pueblo was 54.1 degrees, which is 0.9 degrees below normal.  Pueblo recorded 3.85 inches of precipitation through the month of June. This is 2.57 inches above normal and makes June of 2023 the 3rd wettest on record, behind the 7.14 inches and 4.26 inches recorded in June of 1921 and 1961, respectively.   

 

Looking ahead into July in Alamosa, the average high temperature of 83 degrees on July 1st, warms to 84 degrees by July 4th, before cooling to 82 degrees by the end of the month. The average low temperature of 45 degrees on July 1st, warms to 48 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of July in Alamosa is 65.3 degrees.  Alamosa averages 1.04 inches of precipitation through the month of July.   On average, July is the warmest month of the year in Alamosa.     

In Colorado Springs, the average high temperature of 86 degrees on July 1st, warms to 87 degrees by July 7th, before cooling back to 86 degrees by the end of the month. The average low temperature of 56 degrees on July 1st, warms to 59 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of July in Colorado Springs is 72.4 degrees. Colorado Springs averages 3.12 inches of precipitation through the month of July.  On average, July is the warmest and wettest month of the year in Colorado Springs.            

In Pueblo, the average high temperature of 93 degrees on July 1st, warms to 94 degrees by July 6th, before cooling back to 93 degrees by the end of the month. The average low temperature of 59 degrees on July 1st, warms to 62 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of July in Pueblo is 77.2 degrees. Pueblo averages 1.89 inches of precipitation through the month of July.  On average, July is the warmest month and the 2nd wettest month of the year in Pueblo.
