Heat Continues for the East and South-Central U.S.; Strong to Severe Storms Across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast

The extremely dangerous heat wave continues across the East Coast and much of the South-Central U.S. today. Record high temperatures are expected for some areas especially across the Mid-Atlantic where extreme heat risk conditions reside. February of 2023 started off warm and dry across south central and southeast Colorado, with several passing weather systems through out the rest of the month bringing periods of cool and wet weather as well as another surge of very cold Arctic air across region. For the month of February as a whole, near to slightly below normal temperatures were experienced across south central and southeast Colorado, with near normal to slightly above normal precipitation, save for below normal precipitation across portions of the central and northern mountains.

The preliminary average temperature in Alamosa for the past month of February was 22.8 degrees. This is 1.5 degrees below normal and makes February of 2023 the the 41st coldest February on record in Alamosa.  The average February maximum temperature in Alamosa was 41.7 degrees, which is 0.5 degrees above normal. The average February minimum temperature in Alamosa was 3.9 degrees, which is 3.5 degrees below normal.  Alamosa recorded 0.38 inches of precipitation through the month of February, which is 0.10 inches above normal and makes February of 2023 tied as the 16th wettest February, well behind the 1.42 inches precipitation recorded in February of 1963. Alamosa recorded 7.5 inches snow through the month of February. This makes February of 2023 the 11th snowiest on record in Alamosa, which is well behind the snowiest February of 1963, when 16.0 inches of snow was recorded. Alamosa set two new record low temperatures of -23F and -24F on February 16th and 17th.  

 

The preliminary average temperature in Colorado Springs for the past month of February was 34.4 degrees, which is 1.0 degrees above normal and makes February of 2023 tied as the 36th warmest February on record in Colorado Springs. The average February maximum temperature in Colorado Springs was 49.0 degrees, which is 2.5 degrees above normal. The average February minimum temperature in Colorado Springs was 19.9 degrees, which is 0.3 degrees below  normal. Colorado Springs recorded 0.48 inches of precipitation through the month of February, which is 0.16 inches above normal and makes February of 2023 tied as the 36th wettest on record. Colorado Springs recorded 12.4 inches of snow through the month of February, which is 7.8 inches above normal and make February of 2023 the 10th snowiest on record.  

 

The preliminary average temperature in Pueblo for the past month of February was 33.7 degrees, which is 1.4 degrees below normal and makes February of 2023 tied as the 59th coldest February on record. The average February maximum temperature in Pueblo was 53.0 degrees, which is 1.9 degrees above normal. The average February minimum temperature in Pueblo was 14.5 degrees, which is 4.5 degrees below normal. Pueblo recorded 0.46 inches of precipitation through the month of February, which is 0.14 inches above normal and makes February of 2023 tied as the 48th wettest on record. Pueblo recorded 8.3 inches of snow through the month of February, which is 3.6 inches above normal and makes February of 2023 tied as the 31st snowiest on record.

 

Looking ahead into March in Alamosa, the average high and low temperature of 47 degrees and 13 degrees on March 1st, warm to 57 degrees and 21 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of March in Alamosa is 35.2 degrees.  Alamosa averages 0.51 inches of precipitation through the month of March.      

In Colorado Springs, the average high temperature and low temperature of 50 degrees and 23 degrees on March 1st, warm to 58 degrees and 31 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of March in Colorado Springs is 41.1 degrees. Colorado Springs averages 0.79 inches of precipitation and 5.7 inches of snow through the month of March.  On average, March is the snowiest month in Colorado Springs.          

In Pueblo, the average high temperature and low temperature of 55 degrees and 23 degrees on March 1st, warm to 65 degrees and 31 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of March in Pueblo is 43.9 degrees. Pueblo averages 0.82 inches of precipitation and 4.5 inches of snow through the month of March.
