Heat Continues for the East and South-Central U.S.; Strong to Severe Storms Across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast

The extremely dangerous heat wave continues across the East Coast and much of the South-Central U.S. today. Record high temperatures are expected for some areas especially across the Mid-Atlantic where extreme heat risk conditions reside. A mainly west to northwest flow pattern brought a few bouts of precipitation, especially across the northern and central mountains, as well as brief bouts of cooler temperatures to the region, as a few passing weather systems moved mainly north of the region through the first half of the month.  A pattern shift occurred through the last half of October, where as a few weather systems moved just south of the area, owning to better precipitation across the southern mountains and bouts of breezy to windy conditions across the southeast plains. For the month of October as a whole, above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation were experienced across southeast Colorado, with at to slightly below normal temperatures and near normal precipitation over and near the higher terrain, save for pockets of below normal precipitation across mid Arkansas River Valley.

The preliminary average temperature in Alamosa for the past month of  October was 43.2 degrees, which is 0.6 degrees below normal. Alamosa recorded 0.42 inches of precipitation through the month of October, which is 0.23 inches below normal.  

 

The preliminary average temperature in Colorado Springs for the past month of October was 52.4 degrees. This is 1.7 degrees above normal and makes October of 2022, tied with the October of 1927, as the 24th warmest on record in Colorado Springs. This remains well behind the warmest October of 1963, when the average October temperature was 58.2 degrees. Colorado Springs recorded 0.15 inches of precipitation through the month of October. This is 0.62 inches below normal and makes October of 2022 the 25th driest October on record, well behind the trace of precipitation recorded in 1934 and 2016. Colorado Springs recorded a trace of snowfall through the month of October, which is 2.5 inches below normal. 

 

The preliminary average temperature in Pueblo for the past month of October was 54.4 degrees, which is 1.6 degrees above normal.  Pueblo recorded 0.18 inches of precipitation through the month of October. This is 0.58 inches below normal and makes October of 2022, tied with October of 1893, as the 31st driest October on record in Pueblo, well behind the driest October of 1933, when no precipitation was recorded in Pueblo. Pueblo had a trace of snowfall through the month of October, which is 1.9 inches below normal. 

 

Looking ahead into November in Alamosa, the average high and low temperature of 56 degrees and 18 degrees on November 1st, cool to 41 degrees and 6 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of November in Alamosa is 30.3 degrees.  Alamosa averages 0.37 inches of precipitation through the month of November.    

In Colorado Springs,  the average high temperature and low temperature of 59 degrees and 31 degrees on November 1st, cool to 47 degrees and 21 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of November in Colorado Springs is 39.5 degrees. Colorado Springs averages 0.37 inches of precipitation and 4.4 inches of snow through the month of November.         

In Pueblo, the average high temperature and low temperature of 65 degrees and 29 degrees on November 1st, cools to 51 degrees and 19 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of November in Pueblo is 40.5 degrees. Pueblo averages 0.47 inches of precipitation and 4.1 inches of snow through the month of November.
